From a legal standpoint, there are seem to be two opinions of it - one, that they are simply asking for equal treatment under the law that is afforded to heterosexual couples; or two, that they can get the same rights through other legal avenues, albeit with a little more effort, so legitimizing a “marriage” is unnecessary (and, assumed, detrimental). But really, the issue at hand is equal treatment under the law, with the implied second-class citizenship that should be overcome.

From PlanetOut.com (3/15/00:
Dr. Laura Apologizes
Radio talkshow host “Dr. Laura” Schlessinger has been increasingly protested for her anti-gay comments since Paramount announced plans to give her a syndicated television show beginning in September. After many occasions of vehemently insisting that her point of view reflected Jewish moral tradition and upholding it with doubtful studies from the religious right, the Associated Press reported late March 10 that she has apologized. She was quoted as saying, “Regrettably, some of the words I’ve used have hurt some people, and I am sorry for that. Words that I have used in a clinical context [Ed. note: Schlessinger’s degree is in physiology] have been perceived as judgment. They were not meant to characterize homosexual individuals or encourage others to disparage homosexuals. I regularly remind my listeners that we are all made in God’s image and, therefore, we should treat one another with love and kindness, irrespective of one’s faith.” GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has been meeting with Paramount regarding the television show, but offered no comment on Schlessinger’s statement.
For extensive information about Schlessinger’s past remarks and protests of her planned show, visit StopDrLaura.com , which has recorded well over 2.5-million “hits” in its first week and just keeps getting busier. StopDrLaura.com is a production of the StopDrLaura coalition, which includes John Aravosis of WiredStrategies and veteran activists Robin Tyler and William Waybourn, among others.
Caving in to the “liberal media” to cover her ass in her deal with Paramount, or sincere apology? You decide!

Neither. She’s now said in an interview that she wasn’t “apologizing” to anyone. She was simply issuing a “clarification.”
