I have a 2002 Honda Accord sedan, and the glass in the passenger-side mirror got broken.
Is it possible and easy to remove just the plastic plate that holds the glass, and that swivels on the mount, replacing that and the glass, without replacing the mount? Is there a good source that can tell me how to get that off?
It looks like, if you know what you’re doing, that could be as easy as replacing an air filter or headlight.
I can tell you that on an 03 Accord, adjust the mirror fully inward and you can pop it off with a flat head screwdriver. I would assume the 02 is similar. As for getting replacement parts, definitely call the Honda dealer parts dept. and see what they can do.
Definitely do check the dealer so you know their price, but most likely it’ll be a lot cheaper somewhere else. The first place I’d recommend is Majestic Honda: www.hondaautomotiveparts.com which sells dealer-only parts online often at a pretty steep discount. You can also probably find generic mirror glass replacements on eBay and elsewhere. Though you can definitely tell the difference between these and OEM glass when handling them, they work just fine. Finally, a mirror is a good bet as a used part, so you can check your local junkyard or www.car-part.com .
I recently went to a glass shop to repair the side mirror of a Ford E-150. Guy just grabbed the plastic plate and ripped it out of the frame. Stuck it back in after replacing the mirror. ($40)
Recently at an auto parts store (can’t remember which) I saw cut-to-fit mirror replacements where you just peel off the backing and stick it on the cracked mirror. Probably not the prettiest solution, but definitely quick and cheap.
When this happened to me, I looked into the DIY option, and it was going to cost around 25 bucks. For 30 bucks I took it to a shop that had it in and out in 10 minutes with a new mirror on there.
Don’t go to the dealer, but definitely shop around.
