Honduras Election is Close

I’m not sure how seriously to take her critique..

The meager polling suggested she had a real chance of winning. Actual results, during a long counting period, coming out worse than all polls, might lead almost any candidate, even in a stable democracy, to be a bit in denial.

I saw an article where one of leading figures in the governing party advised that they should concede, but now I cannot find it.

Anybody notice both candidates’ names are Arabic, and both derived from the same Arabic word? Nar ‘victory’. Asfura means sparrow.

Probably not. Few people have your superpowers, Johanna.

I did expect the coincidence of the unusual character string Nasr would stand out, even if knowing no Arabic.

I did notice, and was wondering about the details, and appreciate your providing them.

No. Atamasama is correct about superpowers.

I knew they were of Palestinian descent.

Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, is of half Palestinian descent.

There are a lot of Central Americans of Palestinian descent.

The race remains close.

As of 3:15 PM today, New York time:

Nasralla - 40.27 percent
Asfura - 39.64 percent

78.58 percent of the count is complete

P.S. The results at another newspaper seems very slightly more up-to-date, with Astura edging up just a smidgen:

Their maternal surnames are both Arabic too. (Kudos to the Spanish language for doing this!) Nasralla’s maternal surname is Salum, which I recognize as a common Lebanese name, and I know somebody from Lebanon named Sallūm (it has the double L in Arabic, but in Spanish that’d be a different sound, so it’s a single L. Catalan puts the raised dot between the Ls to show it’s just /l/ twice as long instead of /λ/). It means somebody who says hello a lot.

The maternal surname of Nasry is زبلة Zabla, which literally means ‘garbage’.

This is relevant although it makes, by implication, a sort of argument I don’t usually like:

Why is Trump suddenly so obsessed with Honduras?

Putting it in less measured prose, the theme seems to be that Trump is an idiot who listens to whomever last got his ear. As a result, he is (from a MAGA POV) mistakenly supporting a less Trumpy candidate.

This isn’t to endorse my link, just to through it out for anyone interested.

AFAIK, none of the presidential candidates is happy about the Hernández pardon. True?

Scratch what I said above, I was wrong, I should have checked the Arabic spelling first. Three of the letters are the same, but the 4th letter was missing.

It’s زبلح Zablaḥ, which means ‘fool’.

Yeah, with Trump and Honduras it’s just corruption and money. Yet he says he’s cracking down on drugs. Uh huh.

Trump’s man appears to have won, although recounting is planned:

How Long Will the Scrutiny of Ballots with Irregularities Take?

P.S. I call Nasry Astura Trump’s man because Trump endorsed him, but Astura appears to be far more normie than Donald.
.

Both parties are fairly centrist, but Astura’s party is more Christian Nationalist, and has deep ties to drug traffickers and general corruption. So yeah, seems more like someone that Trump can relate to.

Assuming Astura wins and takes office, the first test will be whether he orders the Honduran government to drop this:
