Sounds like some cultural imperialism going on here. Who are we, in the West, to judge another culture? All cultures are entitled to respect, and should be embraced. Don’t you value diversity?

“Don’t you value diversity?”
No. Not that kind.
This thread seems to devolve more into GD than BBQ, which is not a bad thing, I guess.
It looks as all posters agree that these acts are abhorrent, so Bricker’s comment seems out of place. A culture that encourages these acts is at least in that respect not to be respected. However, that it is part of the culture of an Islamic country doesn’t mean that it is part of Islamic culture.
The thing is, that AFAIK honor killings do not exist in all Islamic countries (for example Morocco, if I’m right). So that’s why you cannot say that it is an Islamic cultural thing. It is part of the culture of specific countries who happen to be Islamic, though there still is discussion how wide-spread it is in these countries. Therefore saying that it is part of Islamic culture is incorrect.
FWIW, I’m not familiar with Islam in general and do not feel a wish to defend it in general, nor to detract it. I just hate to see unjust allegations being made. If you want to slag off Islamic culture (whatever that may be), do it for the right reasons.
Mehitabel: a problem in speaking about the Islam is that there is just as much consensus and common leadership as there is within Christianity. If you are Protestant, you don’t feel that the Pope speaks for you, do you? There are some major splits within Islam, which means there is no single leader (such as the Pope within R-C) who can give directions.
Saying that a culture is ‘allowed’ to be extent is rather odd. What do you propose to do? It is horrible that such acts are committed, but cultural change is not an easy thing. And unjustly blaming religion for it is surely not the right course.
of course, to some it would be a moot point to inform them that this happens in the Christian Church aswell.
I value diversity.
I value holiness and spirituality, wherever I find it.
I do not value murder.
Seems pretty simple. I’m sure lots of Muslims and Christians would agree with me.
And then, there would be others who would think it’s perfectly okay to kill infidels or abortion doctors…
