My kid is addicted to this show, which pops up on BBC Kids. Because he insists on watching it, I end up watching it - and dammit, I ended up liking it too!
It’s a sort of Monty Pythonesque take on historical episodes, some in live action skits, some in music videos. Some of them are screamingly funny. I particularly liked the “Heavy Metal Music Video” version of the story of William Wallace:
Heh, not sure how I’d ever have heard about it if my kid didn’t watch it … but yeah, I at least have no shame in liking it, even though it’s a kid’s show.
I was introduced to this show by my kids and we all love it here. Some of the songs are really catchy - we’re particularly fond of the Pachacuti song over here.
A friend linked me to some bits in IRC, and I decided I liked it, so I’ve been watching it on BBC Kids for the past couple weeks (free preview until the end of the month).
I got addicted to these on YouTube a while back and love them. I wish there was an American equivalent; I’d round up a cast and do it myself if I had the costume budget and camera equipment. (“We can make a YouTube infotainment history video right here in this old barn!”)
HBO had a series in the 80s called “Encyclopedia” that was very similar. It was educational sketches and songs–but not just about historical figures. Although I did learn about Louis the 14th the Sun King from the show…as well as what a quorum was.
The kid has some books and discs, but we haven’t seen the TV show (on the free to air channels at any rate) down here in New Zealand.
If the kid wasn’t already blowing our broadband on Sonic the Hedgehog & Doctor Who clips, I’d tell her to try youtube … she’s at my parents’ place this week, I’ll tell her to try youtube!
