Hostile Dialect; A Word, Please.

Yeah, but it isn’t true. At all. It verifiably just isn’t true. You posted 10 times by my count, and managed to garner a Mod warning for insulting others.

See, this also is not true. You’re pointing and laughing and mocking and insulting people for no reason. What is your definition of “being a jerk,” that this behavior doesn’t apply?

The whole ludicrous furry thing was posted on a public message board, my frail little violet. Since the original thread was in MPSIMS, yeah, replies would be somewhat limited in nature. This isn’t MPSIMS. What you call ‘spitting’ is me gagging on bullshit.

People who wanna dream they’re cartoon animals can do that but their right to act like infantile idiots doesn’t entitle them to respect. Same goes for drunk, face-painted sports fans, Scientologists, screaming Jonas brothers fangirls, crass women who throw candle “parties” to extort money from friends, etc. Seeing the gist here? Puerile, self-indulgent behavior does not have to be respected. Allowed, yes. Respected, no.

10 times? Ok, that’s more than I thought. Still, I wasn’t being particularly inflammatory. Most of my posts were innocuous. I did get warned for saying “loosen up the squirrel suit.” [shrug] I haven’t posted there today, though. I’m keeping it in the Pit.

It’s not for no reason, it’s for dressing and behaving in a patently ridiculous manner. If i said I thought face painters at football games looked ridiculous, would you accuse me of being a jerk?

I saw ten, but who’s counting? :stuck_out_tongue:

This is a hot button I’ve never seen discussed before. Some people, including you, Dio, don’t think it’s insulting to question somebody’s mental health. The people whose mental health is being questioned always find this insulting, and I think they’re right in almost all cases. Saying somebody is stunted isn’t expressing concern for their health, usually it’s just demeaning. So when you ask if all the furries are stunted - surprise! Umbrage ensues.

I made some stern comments but no warnings were issued in the thread. We try to mark those clearly so the people being warned can’t miss them. There were several comments on both sides of the argument that deserved warnings, but I hoped that if I called it even, the thread would be somewhat civil for the furries and maybe educational for everybody else. Maybe that worked and maybe it didn’t, but meanwhile, at least the worst of it is now in this thread instead of over there. If comments like these were being made in the MPSIMS thread, I would have given out warnings and locked the thread.

I have no critter in this fight, but I deeply disagree with this. One’s choice of beliefs are extremely revealing about one’s character and one’s threshold for making confidence judgments. I may know someone for awhile and think reasonably well of him, but if I were to find out that he was, say, a scientologist, a Randroid, or completely beholden to a “lifestyle” that I find objectionable, I would have to reevaluate the friendship.

Well, one would hope that if they were that completely beholden to a lifestyle you found objectionable, it would come across in their behavior very early on.

It’s an interesting question, though. If I knew a person and he seemed like a pretty regular guy, likes the same stuff I do, and I can talk to him, but I found out he was a Scientologist, that would give me pause. But nearly all the Scientologists that get public face time are pushy liars who try to convert who they can. If he kept his Scientology to himself unless asked about it, and otherwise acted like a decent human being instead of the crazies you see on camera, I don’t know that it would be worthwhile to terminate the friendship.

Just because you state an honest opinion doesn’t mean you’re not also being a jerk.

If a thread is started in the Game Room where where the OP wants to discuss football with the other football fans on the SDMB;

where the OP has specifically requested that anyone inclined to bash football fans start a Pit thread instead;

and you still decided to join the thread just to share your opinion that football fans are ridiculous because they paint their faces;

then yes, I would accuse you of being a royal, colossal jerk.

Do you honestly not see why that is?

Depends on the context. If I met someone who seemed cool at work, I would have no way of guessing what he does in his spare time. It may not be at all obvious that he lives in some severe bondage relationship and that he keeps his wife consensually cuffed to the radiator during the day. This side of him would probably never bubble up either in the office or at the bar after work.

Fair enough. I would not think that scientology would make him a bad person, just that he probably makes confidence judgments with very little evidence that I consider “rational”. In my life, I have seen this correlate with all sorts of rotten shit, including the reelection of George Bush. He may no be a pushy liar, but if he believes in Xenu, well, I have to draw the line somewhere.

I would probably find it easier being friends with someone who likes to fuck in a fursuit, because I am not strictly uncomfortable with sexual deviance by itself. I just have pretty strong feelings about the art of life, as it were, that are incompatible with submission to what we call “lifestyles”.

Diogenes understands imagination just fine–he practices every day when he imagines he’s an interesting poster or worthwhile human being.

You should maybe imagine a better burn, because that one was pretty bad.

Dear me, I wouldn’t want to be looked at with suspicion.

I’m with Ivan. It’s an utterly mockable waste of a serious person’s time.

Now, I must get back to rewatching all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” This time, I’m going to include the Angel episodes in sequence.

The lesson being, of course…

Yeah, I’ll just have to be content with being able to read (unlike, apparently, you and Dio) and, y’know, not being a gigantic flaming asshole.

Whedon is a furry? NOOOOO!

And I’ll just be content with “fursecuting” emotional toddlers.

Why would he bother to do that, when it would be far easier to just run a search on the word “football”. Every single hit will likely have an example of “inane remarks”.

If anything, sports is one of the topics on this board that is all but guaranteed to attract a thread-shitter, and a proud one at that.

Personally, I find pointing and laughing at people who are different to be the very definition of an infantile hobby–I was taught not to do that before I hit kindergarten. Pot, kettle, etc.

Seriously, if you were just laughing or repulsed I’d be less inclined to care–you’re generally a jerk about things you don’t personally understand, we’re used to it. It’s the fact that you’ve been more incapable than most in this thread of fighting your own ignorance on the topic–you’ve been doing the equivalent of “I keep reading on the internet that Obama’s a damn Muslim who went to a madrassa, maybe you Democrats oughta make a better effort if that’s not the way it really is, since google knows all.” Even you are usually better than that.

I like sports, but it doesn’t upset me or make me feel persecuted if someone else thinks they’re stupid. I also think that the fans who paint their faces or wear costumes look ridiculous, but at least those people don’t take themselves seriously. It’s just a goof for them. They don’t create elaborate fantasy lives around it.

I’m a sports fan and I have no problem admitting that therapy would probably be helpful. I’ve been a Detroit Lions fan for 25 years, if that’s not some kind of masochism, I don’t know what is.

I don’t know what SCA is, but hells yes I find RenFaires disturbing.
