Ok Experts-
I installed a new browser-“Opera”, and I had it up and running. After importing my “favorites” from MSN internet explorer, it seems as if MSN has “taken over” my opera browser. My screen now converts to MSN internet explorer every time I try to access a bookmark. Are the two related?
Is their a way to restore Opera operating browser? I can’t even access Opera’s help page- MSN won’t let me! Is this a takeover by MSN or did I do something else to mess this up?
HELP!!
Maybe your .HTM files are still associated with IE. Try changing the association manually to Opera, and see if this makes a difference.
Do you meant that activating a bookmark in Opera brings up Internet Explorer? If so, a few questions: What version of Opera? What operating system? What version of IE? If you right-click on a bookmark and pick “Properties” from the pop-up menu, what appears in the “URL” box?
However, assuming that you mean that clicking on a link on the desktop or in a message brings up IE instead of Opera:
Assuming Opera 4.0 or 4.01 (3.x is a little different). Open Opera. Pick “File” from the top-line menu. Pick “Preferences…” from the drop-down menu. Pick “Default Browser” in the left-hand pane. In the right-hand pane, put check marks next to “.htm", ".html”, “http”, “https”, “ftp”, “gopher”, and “wais”. You can check other boxes if you wish. Pick the “OK” button.
Welcome to the ranks of the users of the correct browser! If you do a lot of message boarding, you’ll find Opera’s MDI interface (multiple document windows in one main window) makes it much easier. Unfortunately, you’ll have to fire up IE once in a while to handle improperly-written web pages.
Thanx JonF-
Sounds like you know your “Opera”. I had already tried your suggestion, with no results. I did manage to disable MSN from always taking over my browser, however, now I only get empty windows in Opera after connecting to a site. This happens if I use bookmarks or type in a web address. The window appears after connecting, it is blank-- but no MSN! Only a plain white window. Any suggestions?
P.S.
I deleted MSN from my hotlist file to disable it. I suspect I have changed some other setting in the preferences or perhaps the registry . I appreciate your help with this, and I wouldn’t bother you, but I can’t reach Opera help to troublshoot this.
Well, I know something about Opera, but this sounds like a problem outside Opera.
What operating system?
When you say “MSN Internet Explorer”, do you mean a copy of Internet Explorer that you received from Microsoft Network?
Is Microsoft Network your ISP, or who is your ISP?
In Opera, type <Control-N> and type:
and press <Enter>. Does anything happen? Any error messages?
How are you connected to the Internet? Dial-up modem, DSL, cable modem, …?
If you are connected to the Internet and open a “Command prompt” or “MS-DOS prompt” window, and type:
ping -n 1 altavista.com
what happens? If you get a timeout or something, then type:
ping -n 1 204.152.190.13
and what happens?
What are your TCP/IP settings for the Internet connection?
I attempted the DOS-prompt as you advised and recieved a bad command message. I use MSN as my IP, with a dial up connection. MSN works fine, my tcp/ip settings are not specified, I assume they are the default settings from MSN. None of them have been manually configured.
Any suggestions?
I reattempted the ping and recieved: Sent 1 recieved 1 0
32 bytes, time 427Ms, TTL/54
Well, about the only sugggestion I can give you is to change your ISP and get detailed instructions from your new ISP on how to set up, or ask MSN tech support how to use a non-IE browser with MSN. MSN may not be particularly helpful.
