Hot Fuzz's Fools'n Horses moment (funny moments in film)

I thought this movie was odd in that it got funnier as it went along. Shaun of the Dead was much more even, so I was disappointed at the start of this one. It made good by the end, though.

I loved the whole scene where Nicholas says goodby to his girfriend.

“Bob? Would I go out with someone who looks like Bob?”

That was also done at the start of the film, when Nicholas Angel (Pegg) walks through the door from far away and strides forward right up to the camera, he has a by-god-I’m-a-badass look on his face. Then he holds up his ID badge and has the exact same expression on his face in the picture! That made the movie hilarious to me right from the beggining.

That was Cate Blanchett under that mask!

Something I might need to see it again to check - were the grey hoodies part of the kids’ school uniform all along?

Just saw this movie over the weekend. I’d give it a solid B+. I liked:

  • Angel being told he’s being reassigned because “You’re making us all look bad.”
  • Sgt. Angel throws out all of the underage drinkers from the pub and finds himself alone except for the pissed-off publicans.
  • His reaction when he sees the drunk guy he busted is in now police uniform.
  • His partner’s annoying questions about all the things he hasn’t done as a supercop.
  • The old guy (the same actor who played Filch in the Harry Potter movies, I think) with the barn full of weapons, including a naval mine.
  • Everyone eating cake or ice cream at the station house.
  • The cops storming the supermarket.
  • Grabbing the swan on the fly.

I could do without all the gore, though. The squashing/decapitation of the reporter in the church yard was waaaaaaay too much. Haven’t seen Shaun of the Dead yet, and now I probably won’t.

-The Seargeant flowers in his room
-‘what, have you never taken a shortcut’ was lifted directly from Shaun of the Dead (except for the little flip at the end)
‘Thith reeeeeeeallly hurthhh’
-the lady on the bike…with the hidden panel for two pistols

Elendil: it’s gory, but never really seriously so. Go in thinking it’s an intentional send-up of zombie movies. You’re gonna see blood n guts, but you’ll be laughing while you do so. (honest…don’t look at me that way.)

Rented this last night, expecting nothing. Loved it, definitely one of those films you have to see more than once to catch all the jokes.

Best subtle moment was when the the cops in the background were dropping coins into the swear jar while Angel cursed and ranted about his suspicions of murder.

But my favorite part overall:

Narp?
Sublime.

This movie is by far my favorite of the year. Especially if you’ve watched a ton of action movies, the jokes just get that much more dense recognizing all the references. :stuck_out_tongue:

Awwww :frowning:
Butterman: I use my notebook too!
Angel: Show me
[Show grotesquely violent flip-book animation of Keystone cop shooting a robber]
Angel: That’s extraordinary:rolleyes:
Butterman: Did you ever fire your gun in the air and yell AHHHHHH!!
Angel: No, I never fired my gun in the air and said ahhhh!
Butterman: You’re off the chain!
Andy: YOU WANT TO BE A BIG COP IN A SMALL TOWN FUCK OFF DOWN TO THE MODEL VILLAGE!!
Angel [to school children]: Any questions?
Butterman: Is it true there’s a spot on a man’s head if you shoot it, it will explode?
I loved how creepy and obvious a villain Timothy Dalton was. Especially when he rolls up to the Romeo and Juliet “collision” listening to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits and the wreckage of the refridgerator magnet’s house listening to Fire by THe Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
And of course all the Bad Boys imagery.

Indeed, it was David Bradley, aka Filch. I had thought it was Bill Nighy, the guy who played Slartibartfast in HHGTTG.
(Side note, I found out that David Bradley is also playing Cohen the Barbarian in The Colour of Magic)

Nighy was actually the chief inspector at the beginning of Hot Fuzz.

How funny, I just watched this for the first time the other night, too. Absolutely hilarious, although the gore was a bit off-putting. Even so, Pegg is a damn genius.

“Wait, wait! Think about it. Do you really want to do this?”
 “…Yarp!”

Enjoyed the movie; started out only mildly funny, but acquired cumulative mirth and silliness as it went along.

Perhaps I can help with this bit:

Refrigerator magnate. As in, somebody who has made a lot of money selling refrigerators. It’s a bit of a joke.

Indeed. I caught it the second time they mentioned it and broke out in a laughing fit. Far too clever.

Swan!

You people have all seen Spaced yes?
If you haven’t seen it don’t dive into the web site, wait to see the show.

I missed that! Funny.

Spaced is hilarious. Saw it when visiting my brother in London - he had it on DVD.

I too just saw this for the first time last week… I loved it. I thought it was hilarious through and through, but deceptively so (much like Shaun of the Dead when I stopped to think about it). There was more actual plot and more serious moments than I had assumed there would be. To make a comparison, I thought Super Troopers was hilarious, but I can only watch it once a year or so, otherwise it gets a bit stale. Shaun of the Dead I’ve seen at least 20 times, and after we buy Hot Fuzz I’m sure I’ll be able to say the same about it. The jokes have so many layers, and so many of them are subtle or cumulative, that it remains completely watchable.

Incidentally, is there any way to see anything Discworld in the states? I would love to see how they are acted, how they make the transisiton to the screen… and, of course, I just love all things Discworld.

It’s even more clever than that. Angel (Angle  ) and one of the Andy’s are having a heated argument. Whenever one of them swears, their partner drops a coin in the swear box (“thank you Danny”, “thank you Andy”).

I wildly adore the relationship between Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, both in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Shaun: He’s not my boyfriend!
Ed: (handing a beer to Shaun) It might be a bit warm, the cooler was off.
Shaun: Oh, thanks, babe. (winks at him)
