My father was an original Playboy Club member (though he did settle when they started closing clubs and there was the lawsuit) and he gave me his membership key (w/ member # engraved) & the metal membership card (w/ membership #, naturally), as well as the first 10 years worth of issues.
Inspired by the OP I was off to the cloud and found that there was a set of unpublished MM photos taken by PB at the time of the original session. They are kind of cute.
PLAYBOY didn’t shoot those pictures; they were shot, like, a decade earlier and used in a car parts calendar long before Marilyn was famous. In fact, PB was four or five issues in before any of their gatefold models or photographers knew that that magazine was where the pics would wind up (Hef just bought whatever cheesecake photos freelancers were passing around for the first few issues).
There were some rocky months before Hef could afford to hire staff photographers. Models were similarly out of reach; it’s telling that Hef had to get a girl from his steno pool to be “Playmate of the Month” three times before he could reliably hire real/aspiring models for the gig.
