Today was municipal and school board elections in Sask, and I just came back from the longest voting line I’ve ever been in! Roughly an hour and a half, start to finish. Voting was in a school and the line curved around the block, and then a big snake line in the lobby of the school, with the school doors propped open by the number of people coming and going.
Got in some nice chats with people in line, saw some of my neighbours and friends.
I wasn’t expecting the long wait, so I wasn’t bundled up as much as I would have been if I had known (3 Celsius by the end of it). Dress shoes and light socks did not keep my feet warm, plus I was wearing summer weight trousers. And the open doors meant it wasn’t much better in the school.
But now I’m home, with a Laphroaig lemon and honey hot toddy, and the heater blowing on my shearling slippered feet.
A couple days ago I made a similar toddy using Havana Club rum (made in Puerto Rico despite the name) after a bone-chilling evening dining outdoors in a stiff breeze off the ocean with the temp about 75F/24C. No democracy was involved, but the toddy was good!
I hope you weren’t using the good Laphroaig for that. A fine single malt should be taken neat; their young & cheaper tipple is fine for mixing.
That was my thought also, a shuddered a bit reading that and I don’t even like scotch but I was married to someone who enjoyed a wee tipple of Laphroaig once in a while.
I never had to wonder what to give him for his birthday. It does smell lovely.
If you’re in line by 8pm (closing time) you get to vote.
Of course she left a few mins early, figured she’d vote quickly & then upload the file for work from home. She didn’t do that until after the window closed so it caused problems the next day.
Voter turn-out was 25%. It was up 5% from the 2020 election which probably accounts for the long lines. Wasn’t just our polling station that had lines. Have heard from coworkers from other parts of the city that lines were long.
