I hated this the first two times I saw it (catching it both times in the middle), but some parts intriqued me. I finally saw the beginning & it made more sense. Now I got the freakin’ DVD & I’m getting obsessed here. I’m wondering about some things now.
OK, Mama Firefly’s kids are Baby F., Otis B. Driftwood, Tiny (f*d a stump) & Little Wolf (the pickled baby). Who were their daddies? OK, Earl/The Professor is Tiny’s Daddy, but also of Otis &/or Baby?
And where do Captain Spaulding & Grampa Hugo & Rufus Jr fit in?
I think Capt S may be Mama’s brother & Grampa is her father (maybe Capt S’s also). I won’t say that Grampa might not also be Dad to some of Mama’s kids. I think Rufus is Baby’s full brother, maybe also her man. Heck, they probably all help themselves to each other (well, guys w/ girls- I don’t wanna accuse 'em of being gay ).
I’ve also gathered this much from Rob’s commentary & various websites-
Earl is The Professor is Dr. Satan’s Assistant.
Baby’s name is actually Vera-Ellen.
Are these actually explained anywhere in the movie or are they unexplained backstory? I know the original idea was that Grampa Hugo was gonna be revealed to be Dr. Satan, but that idea was shelved.
okay… grandpa hugo was sposed to have been dr satan but the actor died. as far as a family… i think its a family in the manson family sense of the word, as in a group of psychos living together.
I just read about this movie on some movie spoiler website, and it sounds like one of the most horrific, ugly, unsettling movies ever. No offense to anyone who liked it, but I know I could never sit through that.
A question: why do a few of the characters have names taken from old Groucho Marx characters? Otis B. Driftwood and Captain Spaulding are both characters Groucho played in old Marx Brothers movies, and “Firefly” is the last name of another character of his, Rufus T. Firefly.
BigBad- I knew that about Captain Spaulding (“the African Explorer!”) but not about the names of Otis or the Firefly name (and Rufus is the name of another member of the family). And I will say that if you don’t think you could stand the film, you’re probably right- some parts were rough going for me & I love the stuff.
Anyway, I would say Rob Zombie must be quite the Groucho fan!
pope_hentai- I knew the actor (Dennis something) passed away before the final edit was made but Rob’s commentary seems to indicate the Grampa-Dr Satan idea was shelved because it just seemed a let-down. Of course, Rob may not have been totally forthcoming in the commentary. He did say that some Grampa-Dr Satan footage was shot so maybe there will be an additional scenes DVD edition sometime.
