I have two Spathaphyllums (Peace Lillies) that were doing very badly until I repotted them. They are doing alot better now but won’t flower. How can I get them to flower? I have them on a South window that gets plenty of light, but if I open the shades they seem to wilt. Should I just keep increasing the direct light by a few minutes a day and then decrease it? Or should I use some fertilizer with high potassium (or which ever is for flowering)?
If you haven’t fertilized yet, do it now. I usually dilute houseplant fertilizer by half of what it says on the bottle. I like Schultz Instant houseplant fertilizer.
Spathes don’t like direct light, move them into indirect light, and don’t overwater.
any recommended fertilizer? I forget what makes them flower, the potassium or potash? Should I use something like 15-30-15 (basic Miracle grow) or something with less nitrogen.
My spaths are just beginning to flower. They seem to have periods of flowerlessness and periods of flowering. I havent really read that much on them, but when i bought mine it was around winter or so. So, their flowering time is probably fall through winter.
But yes, do fertilize them. An all purpose fertilizer should do the trick.
Hmmm… some plants do require specific light and/or temperature cycles to bloom, but not this one. A bright north window is good. Fertilize, but not too much, or the leaf tips turn brown. I use less than half of the directed amount. Also, it’s best to fertilize only if the plant has active new growth.
I’ve had mine outside in filtered shade all summer. It started blooming shortly after I put it out and is still going.
Speaking of which, I’d better bring it in tonight. There’s a frost warning. <sad emoticon here>
