Nice stuff, but you should notice that the only smiley they ever added was ;j and it was such a flop they aren’t apt to add more.
Hell, Achmed, we’re talking about getting rid of sigs in an effort loosen things up around here. Be grateful for the smilies we’ve got.
p.s. ;jHappy Passover;j
Besides, I have seen those emoticons/smilies used all over the pace. Seems hardly a licensing issue anymore.
Oh and we are good with what we have here.
Awwwwww, maaaaaaan. . . .
Thanks! I’d forgotten – have to run out and get some matzoh while I still can (great with peanut butter). Happy Passover to you too!

There is simply no way that the Chicago Reader is going to spend money to increase the amount of bandwidth we use around here. Especially if it turns out that someone else claims to own any of those smilies. Although stranger things have happened once or twice in recorded history.
:wally
And let’s not forget the now-infamous Invisible Smiley… like this:
If they are so down on smilies, how come TubaDiva promised to add more?
We’re not down on smileys, per se, we just have to be very careful with them. If we get any from any outside source, then there’s a can of worms with copyright issues. If they ask for money to use them, then the answer is “no” right there. Even if they don’t ask for money, if we see a site with a bunch of smileys that says “Here, go ahead, I’m putting these in the public domain”, then we still have to be careful, in case that site isn’t itself the original owner. Maybe they just borrowed/stole them from someone else, who maybe does mind us using them. The smileys that Tuba is planning to add were all made in-house by our own members, specifically for the use of the SDMB, so this isn’t an issue.
It also takes a bit of administrator timeto add new smileys, and as you’ve no doubt noticed, time is a commodity that our administrators are unfortunately short on.
Not to pick a fight or anything, but what makes you say the ;j smiley was a “flop?” People use it, don’t they?
It serves it’s purpose.

I also recall a lot of flack at the time. When search is faster, you should check on this forum. They even had to rename it a couple of times and there were GD debates on the term Yid.
ChiefScott is undoubtedly one of those who objected at the time. That seems to be his primary rant.
And you, ispropyl, should do some research prior to opening your yap and making false accusations. Or is that your “primary” function here? The link below will take you to the thread you are referencing. You’ll note that ChiefScott did not post to it although quite a number of sock puppets and trolls did. I don’t s’pose you know anything about that though.

Nor can I find any Great Debates (I’ve no idea what “GD Debates” are. God Damned Debates, perhaps?) from that time period containing the term “yid.” And finally, it was only renamed a single time, not a “couple of times” as you have stated.
In short, your post couldn’t be more wrong. There isn’t a single grain of truth in it.
FTR, I prefer the smilies here, although the potential for ChiefScott going nuts and declaring war on small defenseless countries is probably too great to justify the cost.
[sub]You gotta admit, though, some of these would work well in The Pit.[/sub]
Lovely! No reason not to do both – in particular, the “puke” smiley from AR15.com is IMHO much more artistically pleasing, whereas the “borg”, “bandit”, and “deal” smileys from GotApex.com are adorably useful.
(sorry, such a limited set here
