I rarely use smilies, but I’m not really against them either. With that said, I’m wholeheartedly behind :deadhorse:, and it has my hypothetical vote any time.
Yeah, we need new smilies, I promised 'em ages ago and it’s been one thing and another keeping me from 'em. Lemme see if I can free up some time and go look at things.
I’ll set to work on designing a few right away Tuba (now that I know you’'ve not ruled the idea out, at least), heck, you can always throw 'em back in my face, can’t you?
I have to assume it was initially going to be part of a set of stock “It’s A Small World After All” characters, which are common at sites that have lots of smilies. One with a plaid tam, one with a bowler, one with an Indian feathered headress, one with a Viking helmet, etc…
If that assumption were true anyway, it would make the choice just random as the first of many.
As I recall, the tech was just trying stuff buy adding a smiley, posting it and deleting the thread. He was making decisions to get the format right, as whether to use “;” or “:____:”, whether the character was going to use a capital J or small j, etc.
Anyway, he got spotted and so admitted what he was up to. Since the other characters weren’t ready, however, the focus changed from “What all smilies are available” to “What is the PC term for this single smilie”. There were several threads on that in Great Debates.
The upshot was that the character changed names, and the whole thing became more work than it was worth.
After all, after a flap like that, who wants to stir up new debates about how Indians are represented/not represented by feathered headresses?
It may also have something to do with the fact that the fellow (sdimbert, I believe it was?) who created the ;j and :wally smilies is, in fact, an orthodox Jew.
Incidentally, it’s always seemed a bit odd to me that the :wally smilie is winking, but uses a colon, whereas the ;j smilie has both eyes open, yet is spelled with a semicolon.
