Where did ‘How about that, sports fans!’ come from? It’s a common phrase (or at least it was at some time), but what is its origin and how did it become popular?
Mel Allen on This Week in Baseball.
This Week in Baseball was a weekly highlight show. In its heyday there wasn’t much Baseball on TV and TWIB that was about the only way to follow your favorite team if you didn’t happen to live in its local tv market. Mel Allen was the announcer and would follow up various highlights with “How About That.”
I think he was also the announcer for the Yankees which I’m sure also helped popularize the phrase, but TWIB is what made him known nationally.
