How bad a scandal for you to *not* vote for Trump's 2020 Democratic opponent?

Velocity, please. “…some major scandal…”? Perhaps one put a dog in a pet carrier, strapped it on the roof of his car and sped down the highway at 80mph? Perhaps someone stole the prep notes for a debate? Perhaps one had an undocumented employee?

In your scenario, is Bernie Sanders this “3rd party” in our grand two-party system? After all, he’s running and he’s a known quantity.

I wouldn’t vote for Trump if you held a loaded pistol to my dog’s head (re: National Lampoon cover - Buy this magazine or we’ll shoot this dog.)

Surely in times like these begging for the people part of “We the people” to come up with something other than the same ol’ same ol’ there are deeper considerations than this…Why in the world are we looking at people like Trump, Kamala, Biden, Rubio, Beto, Cruz, Warren as sufficient to lead our country? Are these the ONLY people in this land, or is this “Two-Party system” that cripples that 3rd requiring SCRUTINY?

I think zombies are a tad more realistic then Donald Trump winning the presidency. Shit Donald Duck winning the 2016 election is more realistic.

I’m having a hard time seeing any scenario in which the Electoral College helps Democrats, no matter how good or bad the D candidate may be. The only way the EC helps you is if you lose the popular vote but hit 270 EVs anyway. How do the Ds do that? They’d have to somehow win swing states like Ohio, North Carolina and Florida while losing the national popular vote.

No matter what, the EC always helps the Rs. A Wyoming voter has 3x the power of a Californian. Rural red states always carry more proportional weight.

Not true. In 2004, GWB won the popular vote by three and a half million, but would have lost the Presidency if only 50,000 votes in Ohio had flipped. And in 2012, the EC was an advantage for Democrats, though they didn’t need it (IOW, there was some number N such that, if exactly N% of voters in each State had moved from Obama to Romney, Romney would have won the popular vote, while still losing the election).

The EC doesn’t consistently favor one party or the other, it just introduces random noise into the process. If more people understood this maybe we could be rid of the damn thing.

(Remember, voters in Vermont and Delaware also have more proportional weight in the EC than Texas voters do)

Seriously, this thread has made a refreshing and enjoyable break from all the threads where people are worrying that a contentious primary might divide the Democratic vote in 2020.

Well, I wouldn’t vote for Tulsi Gabbard for dog catcher, so if she were the Democratic nominee, I would sit out the vote. As much as I hate Individual 1, Gabbard is no better.
