How can I connect to cable broadband wirelessly?

Long time lurker finally checking in… nice place you have here!

Due to the hassle my girlfriend is giving me about network cable strung through the house, I’d like to connect my PC to my cable provider’s set top box wirelessly. At the moment they’re connected from the Ethernet port in the back of the set top box to a network card in the PC. I’ve set up a (small) home network before, but I’m not sure what I need here.

Just guessing, I think I need a wireless access point connected to the set top box, and a wireless network card in the PC.
However, I’ve been advised that I probably need a router instead of an access point. Do I really need this - as I only need to connect one PC?

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

The only wireless solutions I have found seem to be long distance. Eg http://www.radiolan.com/

No, you shouldn’t need a router (or at least a separate device that specifically identifies itself as a router).

Many Wireless Access Points on the market today include a built-in four port hub, which will allow you to connect other wired computers, if you later wish. Also, you will certainly be able to connect additional computers over the wireless LAN as well.

Look for a Wireless Access Point that also describes itself as a cable/dsl router, like the Linksys BEFW11S4.

Good Luck.

Oh, and I almost forgot…
