I have my mind set on being a sumo wrestler for Halloween. I have found tons of sites selling the costume, but they are all at least fifty dollars, some even eighty. I cannot afford that much. So I have decided to try to make one instead. The only problem is, I have no idea of how to go about making it. Can a doper(s) help me out here? Even a site with cheap sumo costumes would be good. (cheap being under forty dollars, at the most)
How big are you? I mean, what size, approximately? I have a nude-colored but opaque bodysuit with long sleeves and long legs I can lend you, if it fits – it’s a woman’s large, and stretchy enough to fit an average sized guy, I would think. You could stuff it with polyfill or something for the fat and muscles, then just wrap a white cloth diaper style over. Can’t help you with the hairdo, though. My email link works, so just let me know if you wanna borrow the suit, and I can mail it to you.
Thanks for the offer, LifeOnWry, but I’ll be wanting next year to do the same, and I don’t want to bother you with the shipping and such. You could maybe tell me where you got the suit and if it will do, I’ll buy one and save the time/money it would take to lend yours.
Ebay has a costume under 40, but the auction ends in about 8 hours, I think. It looks pretty good. There are also sites on the Net, like

that show you how to make one. You should have fun this Halloween!
Try a dancewear store or site for the unitard. Scroll down a bit to see the long sleeved one it comes in nude and large and x-large.
The mawashi s quite alot of silk. "For the match the rikishi are naked except for a silken loincloth called the mawashi. Made of heavy silk approximately 10 yards long by 2 feet wide, it is folded in six and then wrapped around the waist from four to seven times depending on the girth of the rikishi… The strings hanging from the front are of silk stiffened with glue and as they are purely ornamental can be discarded when they become detached as they frequently do in the course of a match. "
Maybe instead of folding over so much silk which would be cost prohibitive for you, instead you might cover an old fashioned ski belt or piece of foam with some and then leave enough to go between your legs. You can stiffen yarn or embroidery floss with fabric stiffener .
Thanks for the info. I think I’ll make the thing that the link Violet gave says. Though the newspaper will be horribly uncomfordable…
Looking at Violet’s link, I’m thinking it would look a little more realistic if the white sweats were dyed flesh-color, and more comfy if you used polyfill instead of newspaper. Otherwise, I think it’s a great costume. FWIW, I found my unitard in a thrift store, so that wouldn’t be much help to you, but you can find them in costume shops for around $30.
I was think the same thing.
Sumo Wrestling Costume? Admittedly, I’m more of a fan of the WWE, but from what I’ve seen of Rakishi; what more do you need than some damn dental floss?
Seriously, that’s all they wear isn’t it?
