How can I make Gmail retrieve my mail faster?

I recently changed my Gmail email address by signing up for a new account and setting my other account to pick up email from that address, so I have all my email in one place. Gmail appears to support this, so I don’t think that’s supposed to be an issue. The problem is that the email that arrives at the new account takes up to thirty minutes to transfer over to my old account. Is there any way to make this faster?

The more email you get, the more often it checks. I don’t know if there is a lower limit though. I know on one of my accounts that rarely gets mail, it checks every few hours.
