How can I tell if I own stock?

I have a vague recollection of my parents buying some stock in my name with some of my college money when I was maybe 13 or 14. It was stock in Apple Computer, I do remember that.

Do I have to know the company we bought it through to find out if I do, in fact, own this stock? I checked on the ones I thought it might be and a couple of them I can’t find… if the company is gone, do I still own the stock? How would I go about selling it?

Apple’s transfer agent is First National Bank of Boston. Call them (First National) and ask if any shares are registered in your name. They can also advise you as to how to sell it, obtain share certificates, etc.

Well, I think the easiest way would be to ask your parents; however, I’m assuming that’s not an option.

I don’t think the broker matters a huge deal - the stocks are with Apple as opposed to the brokerage house, so:

Have you tried contacting Apple? I would imagine that somewhere at corporate HQ there would be some sort of list of investors, but this may be wishful thinking.
