How can you get a cheap or free shower in a city you don't live in

But only on shower day, Ray
else you might reek for a week, Deke

Sneak into the cabana, Joanna…

Local city community centers will often have shower facilities for members or for people taking a local class. Look for sweaty community club activities like fencing, martial arts, yoga, etc. Often the same building will be shared with other part-time clubs for dirt cheap.

In my case, I was “between plumbing” due to a lease ending and a new apartment not being ready, and had to live out of my car for a couple of months. I joined a small literature club that only met twice a month, club fees were $25 for the whole quarter, and they shared a building that had full shower facilities. I got a cheap ID card at the desk when I signed up, never once attended the club, and just dropped into the building whenever I needed a shower.

So for a strange city, I’d say look up some community yoga clubs in some multi-use community building, ask if there are shower facilities available, and find the cheapest way to make your presence legitimate. I imagine you could even do it for free if you offer to do volunteer work for the center.

Beaches and State Parks often have showers that are free.
Blending in with a college campus crowd is a decent idea, depending on security. It may be beefed up in these turbulant times of school shootings, etc. Smaller, rural colleges may be easier than larger urban ones.
Campgrounds. Many have free showers. Just hike in and pretend you are a camper.
A hospital seems risky. Patients get moved in and out of rooms constantly. You wouldn’t want to get caught showering when someone gets wheeled back from surgery.
You can buy a bag shower - that you just pour water in and hang from a tree. I’ve seen these used at music festivals before.

Stab a waterbed, Ted.

Swim in the slough, Drew.

… splash about before they flush, Rush …

Incorrect. Sprinkler systems almost always have bacteria. The older the system, the worse it will be.

I have been in hundreds of hotels, motels, Holiday Inns…I have never seen a shower in the loo off of the lobby, ever!

In our airport, there is a shower in the ladies room and I assume one in the mens room. Not right there where you can just jump right in, it’s behind a door and you have to get permission, and a key to use it. It may be for the use of flight crew. Or a passenger who has literally had the crap scared out of him or her, not making that part up. I don’t know, though, if you could just walk in and ask ‘can I use the secret shower, if you have one.’

Ask! The worst they can say is no. If they do say no, they may have a good solution to your problem. If so, everyone wins!
