How clued up is the average doper on Internet Memes?

For example… Does Christian Bale’s Batman saying to Heath Leger’s Joker “I accidentally a cola-bottle”

And then Joker replying “Accidentally what?”

And then Batman replying “A cola-bottle”

… mean anything to you?

Meme. I hate that word. I mentally pronounce it “mee-mee” when I see it. This message board is the only place I’ve ever seen it used.

Now I need to go look it up again because I can never remember what it means.

Sorry; didn’t mean to thread-fart.

Well according to Richard Dawkins a Meme is the electronic (Internet) version of a Gene.

Something that, if it has more of an ability to survive than most of it’s rivals, will become common in the pool.

(I have no idea what RD’s actual words were. It’s a long time since I read his words on the subject.

I dunno if I’m the Average Doper[sup]TM[/sup], but I’ve no idea what you’re on about. If that helps.

Arse.

I had an epic edit for this thread going on that I missed the edit window… Now all of what I did has been lost and forgotten in the laziness that is I.

ok I’ve skimmed the wiki entry on memes and I’m not altogether certain that I improved my grasp on the concept, but it sounds like memes are a SDMB meme.

Am I close?

Meme meme meme.

The SDMB certainly has the ability to create Memes (as does any other popular website) but it is by a long way not a thing that was invented or is monopolized by the SDMB.

This might help to understand it… Putting “Hi Opal” Is an SDMB Meme (But not an Internet Meme since it never made it to other websites)

If any website can hold the title for creating the most Memes it is 4chan (I am not a member) Most of the 4chan Memes I’ve seen third, fourth, fifth party.

Back to the OP. No, means nothing. Except that it reminds me of Christian Bale, who seems to have recently beat up his mom, or his sister, or someone. And I know about coca cola as an improvised birth control device. Not sure if this is related or not.

O RLY?

Yes.

Is this a “Can someone explain this to me?” thread or what?

No. It’s the informational version of a gene. A meme is an idea that can reproduce itself somehow, like a fad or an urban legend or a philosophy. Memes usually mutate as well.

For anyone who doesn’t get the meme in the OP, the standard form goes like this:

Troll: I just accidentally a Coca-Coca bottle. Is this dangerous?
Unsuspecting person: Accidentally what?
T: The whole bottle! What do I do?
UP: I don’t understand. What did you do with the bottle?
T: I accidentally the whole thing! This is serious, what do I do?

etc., etc. Other objects can be substituted for the bottle. The joke is the intentional omission of the verb involved, leading to speculation from the UP or others, usually of a sexual nature. The captioned image is yet another meme being combined with this one.

Also, I’d disagree with it being an “Internet” meme. It’s definitely just a *chan meme. Some *chan memes, like LOLcats, become general Internet memes, but most don’t (thank God). If you’re not active in the *chan community there’s no reason you’d have anything more than incidental exposure to this meme.

It also seems to become a ‘meme’ to express in the most perfect way possible: the meaning of any particular meme.

I also dislike this word. It seems like it is used incorrectly a lot of times on this board.

I personally have a 4chan gold account.

I was a lot more au courant with memes back when Usenet had some currency, pre-2000. Nowadays, with specialized web fora and crossposting a thing of the past, the memepool is dominated by discrete fanships. I used gaming, Simpsons and Family Guy memes years before I knew where they were from.

I hear the word, an I am reminded of Diane Chambers’ pronunciation of “mime”.

I heard about memes during a talk given by David Brin, way back in the 20th century sometime. He did credit Richard Dawkins.

Which means memes are one of the few memes that I knew about almost from inception. I’m usually blithely unaware until they’ve run their course.

Za Warudo! Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu Desu
Orly?
Habeeb it!

Ahem Now that THAT’S over with.

I pronounce it like “Maim.” I don’t know why, maybe it’s because I have a deep understanding of what they are doing to the internet.

The one in the OP means nothing to me, but I haven’t been on 4chan in a few months (except for my standard “how good is this place’s websense” test). So I’m not “up” on the new /b/ memes. Eventually I’ll probably read up on all the new ones on Encyclopaedia Dramatica again.

So…did Christian Bale’s Batman say that to Heath Ledger’s Joker? Because I don’t remember that part.
