I though Sam Rockwell stole the show with his portrayal of the Doomed Redshirt. At first totally paranoid, he becomes resigned to his inevitable fate, then hilariously suicidal, and finally a Major Character, when he somehow survives in spite of everything. He had me crying, I was laughing so hard.
He should have won the Academy Award. I’m not joking. Comedy acting is so hard.
This whole clip is funny, but I love his reaction to “You have a last name.”
At the risk of posting a “me, too”, this is a fun movie, especially if you’re the type to mock Star Trek and its ilk. I’ve never been a SF fan but I love this movie. And it’s a good family flick, too. I don’t recall any language or adult content beyond Sigourney Weaver’s costume getting torn, and even that wasn’t a huge deal.
If you haven’t seen it, pop up some popcorn and settle in for a giggle.
Come to think of it, Galaxy Quest:Star Trek::This is Spinal Tap:The Song Remains the Same.
As illustrated by this trailer.
“Well [del]fuck[/del] screw that!”
I love how this quote in the movie is done. They deliberately let you read her lips and say the first word, but the second work is dubbed in.
“Whoever wrote this episode should DIE!”
But corny as it is, my favorite scene is when Quillek(sp?) has been shot, and is expressing to Alan Rickman’s character the admiration and respect he has always had for him. Then Rickman’s little speech, and his angry reaction. In spite of the fact I know my emotions are being manipulated I always get a tear or two at this point.
There was sort of a divide around the late 90’s, when the size of geekdom exploded. Up to a certain point, it was possible for someone to have seen, or at least been aware, of pretty much all of it. Past that point, it wasn’t, unless you were going to consume media full time. So I can understand both the missing it, and the not believing someone could have missed it.
Honesly, I didn’t see Galaxy Quest til years after it came out, because I got the impression it was going to be much more self-hating than it actually ended up being. What TVTropes likes to call This Loser Is You. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was was a The Slayers-esque loving self parody. Once you got past the more-than-a-little-meanspirited Con part of it, anyway.

The TVTropes warning is contextual.
The Con part of it was only mean-spirited because you were supposed to be seeing it through the eyes of the crew, who were oh-so-fed-up with the whole thing because they had been doing it for decades. At the end, the whole atmosphere of the Con is completely different. Good film-making.
It’s weird that GQ and Matrix came out around the same time. I saw both in theater, but if you’d asked me just now I’d have said GQ came out years before Matrix.
Anyhoo, are we sure the comic book store nerd wasn’t just being really nerdy? I’m thinking of how people will joke that Jar Jar Binks never happened. Or maybe they’ll pretend an entire movie never happened. Usually it’s a joke, but every once in awhile a nerd will want everyone to know just how much they have no idea that a certain hated thing doesn’t exist and they’re continually surprised to hear about it.
They probably wouldn’t stock the spin-off toy, then.
Sure they would. Otherwise, how often would they get the opportunity to proclaim their complete nescience of it?
No, I really got the sense that he didn’t know the movie.
And I should also point out this guy is no kid. He’s at least my own age so he’s old enough to have been watching movies in 1999.
That has me convinced that I should see it.
I’m not a sci fi fan. I like science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy. I do NOT like things with titles like Revenge of the Giant Ant Men or Tarantula Terror. I DO like Bimbos of the Death Sun, but that’s a mystery set at a science fiction/fantasy convention…and it’s hilarious.
FWIW, Galaxy Quest has earned the Boyo Jim stamp of approval.
You’ll like it. It’s one of those unexpected gems, where you go in expecting nothing and get pleasantly surprised. Tim Allen’s one good movie (outside the Toy Story movies). It has intelligence, it has a heart and it’s funny.
Most of all, it has Sigourney Weaver. I almost didn’t watch it because of Tim Allen, but I’m a big fan of Sigourney. I actually met her in person once – absolutely gorgeous and totally charming, though IMO she’s a good enough actress that she could be a total bitch and just acting the charming part.
Is there a difference between being genuinely charming, and just acting charming all the time?
If you are genuinely charming, you may or may not be able to switch it on and off. That’s why my motto is “Never trust an actor”. The better they are, the less you can know about their true nature.
Gee. I like Tim Allen. I think the first Santa Clause and For Richer For Poorer are fun movies.
