So, I just watched this for the nth time and I was struck by what a great movie it is. Acting, script, story, effects, cast, it works as a stand alone movie that you only need the vaguest awareness of Trek fandom to appreciate, yet it’s full of nods and winks to the faithful, well done all round.
Sooo, share you favorites scenes, quotes, alternate casting fantasies, whatever.
I’ve just noticed that when they’re trying to get to the reactor to shut it down and they come around the corner to the giant illogical chompers that Sigourney Weaver’s says ‘well fuck that,’ although the audio track says ‘screw’ that. Nice.
It hits all the right notes at being a parody of Star Trek without being mean or cruel about it. It’s a wonderful send up of the Star Treks and done with a loving touch.
There’s a better rated R version that we’ll never see. Like when Weaver says “Fuck this” and Tony Shalhoub’s character is clearly meant to be smoking weed the entire time.
I saw this in the theater and loved it, but the best experience seeing this was at the World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago. Nothing quite like seeing a film where everybody in the audience knows and loves the film and gets every reference.
And then hits glorious homage by having him out-Kirk Kirk; it’s tongue in cheek, sure – but right up through to the shoulder roll on the convention floor saving the day, it’s hard to beat “And what you fail to realize is: my ship is dragging mines.”
