unusual characters like that must make it a right pain in the arse to log in though (say, after clearing your cookies, or on a public computer).

They’re supposed to be, but most people inadvertently uninstall them.

One way to do it would be to use the non-printing character &­#173; .
So typing &&­#173;#173; produces &­#173; which in turn produces nothing.

(note that using the preview feature messes things up)
