I think of a Vorlon.
Someday, my time too will come, and I will sail west to the Havens.
I resemble those remarks.
I saw it here first, but the title was strange so I didn’t look the first time, then said what the heck and found out she’d died. Wow. I’m a member of Giraffe and Fathom but I rarely go to either place much. I see they have threads too. Don’t look for me as I use totally different names at both places.
Really sad that someone that young dies.
We were friends. I found out via her mom’s posting on her facebook page and contacted a few former (current? I don’t know) dopers.
She made the best damned lip balm I’ve ever used.
I post here off and on but I noticed it on two of my FB friend’s feeds who are also long time members.
I was thinking of the older races from David Brin’s Uplift novels, the ones who had evolved out of the Galactic power struggles and vanished from sight.
Some of us even hang around, even if we’re old both in Dope years and real years. I was away from the board for about a year after my wife and I adopted the Firebug, but other than that I’ve been Doping more or less continuously since the summer of 1999. So I saw the thread about Opal’s passing by seeing the link to this thread, actually, on the main page.
As one who attended quite a number of DC-area Dopefests back in the day (and even hosted a few), it’s quite a wrench to think that danceswithcats, norinew, and now Opalcat are all no longer with us.
Found out through Facebook too. Seems the only reasons I find myself here anymore are memorial threads…
I mostly lurk here, posting only once in a while, and am not really linked up on other social media, so I first learned today when I saw it on threadspotting.
Her passing calls to mind many happy Dopefests past with her and some of the other old-timers (many of which are posting on this thread – Hi everyone!)
Bill
what’s going to happen to her website? she had spent so much time on it.
I practically live here, evenings, but I stopped looking at MPSIMS years ago because it was too depressing. I only found out tonight because I was trying to lure a new online acquaintance here and saw the link in Threadspotting. Circle of Life, I guess.
I’m friends with a few dozen SDMB people on Facebook. I come by the boards ever few months to read around, these days.
I second this. They were all awesome people.
I was wondering about this too. I really hope it is maintained.
I’ve been a member of two message boards that were abandoned by their administrators (in the past year). In both cases, the admins said that they had enjoyed it, but they just don’t have the time anymore.
One admin left the board open for discussion. The other pulled the plug on new discussion, but left the existing content available. While we don’t know how things are going to shake out, the early indication is that Opal’s mom plans to pull the plug.
At one time, didn’t Opal have the largest web presence of all, larger than any one person, company, or pornographer?
Although I only come here about once a year nowadays, I’m stil in contact with lots of Old Dopers on LJ and Facebook. Like Rasa said, it’s funny how long we’ve all been friends now and seen each other through the last 10/12 years.
I think I heard about Opal via Geobabe and I passed the message on to a few UK dopers who have migrated to a different, unrelated message board. Kabbes and Lemon Eddy send their regards.
I actually do a pretty good imitation of the way they lift their chins and let out that moaning hum thing. So you may be onto something. Also, to my profound regret, my hair looks a lot like theirs.
Hey Crankywoman!
Hope you’re doing well.
Sorry to hear about this.
(I heard from the Even Older Dopers, myself.)
