I got mine from an X-Files Episode about people getting lost in the woods because of a creature that blends into the surroundings (think “Predator”) and it was like, eating them and dragging them into a pit, and then Mulder got attacked, and Scully killed one, and they found everyone that was i nthe pit, and “Ad Noctum” was carved into a piece of wood that Mulder saw, and then somehow he got this Idea that maybe they were descendants of a dude that discovered that hundreds of years ago and they adapted to their surroundings and are able to reflect and refract light and bend it around them and make them almost completely invisible except, of course, for their red eyes… anyhow… that’s how I got my name…
Well, as long as someone else has copped to a Dungeons & Dragons origin, I can admit my geekhood as well I had a character who was a priest of Thoth. Ptah was (in some versions anyway) a servant of Thoth, so I tacked on the ‘lis’ as a diminutive for my character’s name. It has the advantage of not being used anywhere else online so I never get the “username invalid” whenever I sign up anywhere.
Maeglin is a character from the Silmarillion, by JRR Tolkien. His name in Quenya means “sharp glance.” Twisted by jealousy and rage, he betrayed the last elven city to Morgoth, the Enemy. Cool character, cool name…so I picked it.
And MysterEcks, for whatever reason I had always assumed that you took your name from the medieval mystic, Meister Eckhardt. Dunno why, and I always meant to tell you how cool it was. Guess I can’t anymore.
I did not get it from Alice in Wonderland. It’s the name of this weird Asian candy that my mom hooked me on; I can’t buy it where I live so I have to stock up when I visit up her way. I can’t explain it, but it’s highly addictive stuff, and I have a practically legendary sweet tooth.
(Oh yeah, and my eyes are green. Really really green. Everyone thinks I am wearing cheap colored contacts. Thats how green they are.) But I like the M&M thing better. If anyone needs clarification, just e-mail me and I will explain it to them. Or just ask your neighborhood kid.
“Cervaise” was the last name of a character in something my brother wrote many years ago. He never finished it, but I liked the look and sound of the name, so I picked up on it as a screen handle. I’ve used it for everything ever since, because it’s never, ever taken.
I have since discovered that it’s a French name, and that if you do a web search on “Cervaise,” most of what you get are a bunch of obscure genealogy charts with names like “Yvette” and “Jacques.”
(BTW, FWIW, just to be different, I pronounce it “sur-VAH-yi-see” instead of the more obvious French-y “sur-VAYZ.”)
“Tracer” was a super-hero character I created in 1982 (normal-person identity, Jeff Boeing). I created a Champions[TM] role-playing game character based on him, wrote a novelette (unpublished, of course) describing his origin and his big initial clash with the Evil Interstellar Empire, and even gave him his own theme song.
I’m sure that given the level of interest in odd facts displayed on the SDMBs, a lot of you know the origin of my name. For those that don’t, Alan Smithee is the name used when a director does not want his name associated with a movie. If the opening credits say “Directed by Alan Smithee”, save yourself some pain and find something else to do with the 1-2 hours. Since it’s a pseudonym by definition, it seemed appropriate.
Tzel is short for Pretzel, a nickname I acquired by being able to stick both my feet behind my neck. (I’m a guy.) I can’t do it anymore, regrettably, and even one foot is getting tough.
When I first signed up to message boards, I used the quickly decided upon ‘Iguana’, after Iggy Pop. I used that for the first week I was on SDMB, until I discovered there was another poster called ‘Iguana Boy’, and I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, especially around the time when people were impersonating other posters.
I then decided I would be named after my favourite movie character. Unfortunately, that’s Johnny Depp’s character in ‘Dead Man’, which is William Blake - I didn’t want people to think I was taking on the name of the great poet. So I went for my second favourite character - Henry Spencer from Eraserhead. Kinda boring, but it explains why my old posts are signed with a different name.
It was my first licence plate number. When I got my first car my parents went to the Sec. of State to get me a new plate for it. They got home while I was showing my new car to my then best friend. When my mom held up the plate to show us, the first thing my best friend says is “LCB! Little Crabby Brat! It’s perfect!”… and the name has been with me ever since!
I have red hair and green eyes. I also read comics and enjoy science fiction. I frequently have dreams where I can fly, and just last night in a lucid dream I used telekinesis to save a boy from getting hit by a car. (Actually, it was this morning, in between snooze button hits.)
I love the racetrack. “Seat time” is jargon for “time spent driving a car at the racetrack.” As in…“I’ve gotta get some seat time this weekend!” And it just so happens, I will.
When I was quite young I had a stuffed animal (Paddington Bear, for those who care enough). I called him Punha.
My first independent email account was punha@hotmail.com (it no longer works, for whatever reason). Basically it seemed like a cool idea at the time. Came to me.
When I got tired of hotmail for various reasons (harassment, mainly), I went to a different email provider and thus had to choose a new login. I wanted punha (and if I’d gotten it you’d all know me as punha) but that was taken, so I decided on iampunha . . . i am punha.
When I registered here I had the option of either erlidh or iampunha. As this name takes less time to explain and is more interesting (other one is based on my gread-grandmother’s first name), I chose it. All my accounts online are, if I can help at all, either iampunha or erlidh.
So that’s why. BTW and FWIW I’m erlidh on AIM. I would change, but why bother?
It was too beautiful to pass up, and since it does come out in spellchecker (if you misspell ‘Dionne’), I figured it was public domain. Now he gets credit.
