I did a lot of walking in the first six months. I used to walk a lot anyway, and I took the bus a lot, so there was much walking in between the bus stops.
Then I developed pre-eclampsia/toxemia, and I was put on bed rest. I was allowed to sit up for meals, and I was allowed to shower and go to the bathroom by myself, but otherwise I was supposed lie on my left side, with my feet elevated.
If you have an option, I suggest picking lots of walking as opposed to almost no exercise at all.
Congratulations!
I’ve no experiences of excercise during pregnancy, but we get quite a few pregnant women in my aqua aerobics classes, many right up until delivery. It’s a great, low impact routine.
Hey, congratulations! How you exercise during pregnancy is really dependent on what you were doing before and when you got pregnant. If you were really active when you got pregnant, I’d just keep doing that until it’s no longer comfortable. If you weren’t doing anything to begin with, the beginning of a pregnancy is probably the best time within a pregnancy to start walking or doing something low impact.
I’m a big believer in activity during pregnancy, and getting into the habit now if you’re not already in the habit, could make it easier for you to stick to it after you have the baby.
I ran until the 8th month of my pregnancy. I also swam a lot and continued swimming and walking up until almost the two weeks before my son was born. After 8 months, the running was just too hard on the bottom of my belly and also on my bladder. Though you run faster if you’re desperately looking for a bathroom every 5 minutes.
