How did you like the old movie Patch Adams (1998)? We finally watched it, for the first time

LOL, y’all. I guess I stand alone here, then.

This thread reminds me now that most reviews of this movie, including a documentary on Williams’ life, discount this movie. Just like all-y’all do here.

I am a huge Robin Williams fan when he’s acting in a drama. He was an EXCEPTIONAL actor, absolutely born to do it, with tremendous range; his characters in Good Will Hunting, Awakenings, One Hour Photo, etc. are all quite different. He is just plainly first rate, one of the finest actors of his generation.

His comedy was just so fucking tiresome. His standup was rarely all that funny and I dreaded his appearances on talk shows; the “Loud Drama Nerd In An Improv Troupe Desperate For Your Attention” shtick got old really fast.

The only thing I ever liked him in was The Birdcage. When he stepped back and played straight man to Nathan Lane, I loved him. I also appreciated how well he played a gay man-- convincing, but not mincing, if that makes sense.

His performance in The Fisher King can still bring me to tears.

One of those movies that is so insistently, aggressively bad that it makes me angry to think if it.

I don’t know about that. Dr. Adams once visited the grocery store where my SO worked as a cashier.

Yes. I liked him on Mork and Mindy. And then in Good Morning, Vietnam. But his talk show appearances were tiring. He didn’t know how to dial it back. Johnny Carson was a gracious host for him, but I have to wonder what Carson and Ed McMahon would talk about after Williams’ appearances.

I love his works as a dramatic actor. Good Will Hunting, especially. The World According to Garp, even.

I hated Patch Adams, (the movie).

I felt sorry for his patients. There’s good bedside manner, and then there’s being an insufferable ass clown. His methods helped kill his girlfriend, (who was shoe-horned in to the movie). It was trite, sentimental bull crap.

Personally, I like doctors to do what they need to do, and then let me go. Chit-chat does not put me at ease, it just prolongs the discomfort. Antics would have me seeking a new doctor, stat.
