First of all, I’m leaving it up to you to define your demographic. Age? Sex? Economic Status? Race? Religion? Geographic location? What ever you think defines your demographic is what to use. Also, it’s clearly up to you to figure out how you define the average for your demographic.
As for my answer:
Demographic: American, Male, Early 20’s, College student
I’m a fairly atypical example of this group. I don’t care much for sports (college or pro.) I’ll go if I know someone who’s going and wants me to come along, and I’ll enjoy myself, but I don’t get as riled up as most people at sporting events do.
I rarely drink alcohol, never to the point of getting drunk, and do not go to parties.
I do not like a lot of the TV shows that people my age seem to like. I do not enjoy The Simpsons, South Park or Family Guy. Yes, I’ve seen them; Yes, there are funny moments; No, I don’t think they’re funny enough to spend a half hour of my life on.
I don’t date as I don’t feel that I have the time, money or level of personal responsibility required for a serious relationship. I’m a virgin and not in any hurry to change that.
I am an adult punk. Living in extreme poverty although very well-educated. Do not own a television. Do not drive a car. (never learned.) (don’t want to.) Own an apron. Never married. Never had my nails done. Hate Mickey Mouse and Elvis Presley. Love The Ramones and Queens of the Stone Age. Beat “Half Life”. (Okay, I cheated a little.) I’m just freakin’ weird.
Aging ‘soccer-mom’ I suppose, would be my demographic.
I:
don’t get acrylic nails
dont’ spend a lot of time shopping or in the malls
didn’t send my kids to private schools (though I might have, if I could have afforded it)
have never been on a cruise
don’t belong to the Alumni Association for my Uni
own my own engineering business
am not a Baptist (8 of 10 Mississippians are)
don’t watch TV or go to the movies, much
have never been to a Uni football game
-I am much more liberal on most social issues than most guys of my age and in my area.
-I am nontheistic.
-I care less about my career than most - I make a decent buck, but am more interested in the quality of life it permits, including spending as much time as possible with my family and on the golf course.
-I eat dinner with my family nearly every evening, and attend just about every one of my kids’ performances/ceremonies/etc.
-I am not interested in sports or cars, or any outward displays of wealth/status.
-I’m probably in better shape than most guys my age, and am definitely better at golf!
White male, 40, packing about 20 pounds of surplus flesh
Unhappily married to a Dementor, got kids, no real problems, have pets, hate working but kinda like my job, packing about 20 pounds of surplus flesh.
Attending every thing of Junior’s is almost on a cult-level here (Grandparents regularly attend as well). Are you saying your neighbors don’t do this? (genuinely curious, no snark intended).
I think he forgot to mention his membership in the “Harry Potter Fan” demographic. Dementors in the HP universe are pretty nasty characters. One of their main characteristics is the ability to drain away all hope and happiness from people they encounter.
White male, late twenties, “we squeak by” financially, southern united states.
Well, amongst my peer group, I’m unusual in that I’m neither married nor have children. The only other person in my group who has the same status is my best friend since high school. I am engaged, but that is not correlated to a pregnancy. I am a Shintoist, with atheistic tendencies and that is markedly different from the heavy catholic and various evangelicals that overwhelm the area. I don’t care for sports but will go when invited and enjoy it. I do not watch them on television. I don’t drink that much or do drugs. I don’t care for most popular music, preferring various types of Heavy metal, blues, Noir-type jazzy stuff and world music. I’d rather work on my lawn, than my car.
I am an educated woman in my mid 20s. I think I’m pretty typical for my demographic here in the US, actually, other than the fact that I am a huge fantasy geek and used to play D&D (more typical for guys than for girls in my demographic, I feel). Back in Korea, though, I was definitely an outsider - I was neither a typical Korean girl (girly girl who takes pictures of her dinner at restaurants) nor was I a typical Korean American (spoiled party girl who speaks terrible Korean and is proud of it).
I think it gets less when the kids get to high school. My kids are mainly active in theater and music, and get a number of awards (this is the BEST time of year to be the parent of a successful HS student!) Many times we will be at a concert or something, and will note that the audience is far smaller than 2x the number of kids participating.
Last night my youngest was inducted in the Spanish honors society. It was a not huge thing (tho they do require straight As), and the ceremony was blessedly brief, but I don’t think there were even as many parents there as kids. heck - they even had cookies after!
Of course, with folks’ busy schedules maybe folks had other kids doing other things at the same time. And I know a lot of guys have jobs that require travel or working late. I’m glad mine doesn’t.
There is a lot of overlap among the kids who are in music and receive honors. With some kids, we know we will see the parents at every thing. Other parents we know never show.
Tonight is the honors music recital - my youngest is playing the bassoon. Nope, you won’t hear me complaining about my busy social calendar!
I am an American-born/raised, caucasian, late 30s, male, live in western United States, suburban dweller.
I don’t:
[ul]
[li]Care much for sports, especially football[/li][li]Drink beer or any other alcohol for that matter[/li][li]Own a pickup truck (I own a Nissan Sentra)[/li][li]Listen to country music (I listen to hard rock/heavy metal, which probably does fit within my demographic)[/li][li]Own a dog (I’m a cat lover)[/li][li]Own a gun[/li][li]Hunt or fish[/li][li]Have any interest in politics[/li][li]Have a current or former wife or any children[/li][/ul]
I’m 36, female, white, college-educated (soon to be grad-school educated), and living in one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Differences between me and the “average” woman around here:[ul][li]I’m not married, and have no need to be. Nor have I been daydreaming about my wedding since I was 5, or anything like that.[/li][li]I do have an SO, but until late '06 I was single for a looooong time. [/li][li]I don’t want kids.[/li][li]I’m not into shopping or makeup or fake nails (though of course I care about my appearance).[/li][li]I only recently stopped buying all of my shoes at Payless (but most of the ones I own are still from there, including the pair I’m wearing right now).[/li][li]I participate in open track events and drool over high-performance cars.[/li][li]I have season tickets to the local MLB team.[/li][li]I’m about to finish grad school. (Which is more common than it used to be, but still isn’t the average by any stretch.)[/li][*]I’m not a size 6.[/ul]I think that’s the main stuff.

You can do that for the US using City-Data. (put in your zipcode where it says city)
Based on my zipcode, I’m completely atypical being a Caucasion college educated professional single white female in a neighborhood of mostly working class Hispanics.
