How do I block Edge?

I get that too. But I didn’t want to mention it in this thread because I wasn’t sure it was Microsoft dumping unwanted photos into my background screen.

You may have a mouse issue as well. The mouse I’m currently using on my desktop computer, a cheap one from Walmart I think, (Onn?) will randomly execute a phantom right-click popping up a command menu from time to time even when I’m not touching it. It’s annoying, but at least it isn’t launching Edge or some other random app. I guess when it becomes annoying enough I’ll take a minute to replace it, but we aren’t there just yet.

Hmmm…I also have a cheap Onn mouse I bought at Walmart.

Edge launches for me when I launch something from the main Windows search menu. I rarely do that but I’m always wondering WTF is going on here?

Then I have to relaunch things in Chrome, which is my default browser.

That’s the use case for my link above. Reroute all forced Edge stuff to your default browser.

The OP’s having Edge (or any app) pop up from just moving the mouse is another issue.

So, IMO, the next steps would be, in no particular order:
Open Edge to see if MSN news is the home page. If it’s not, that means whatever is launching Edge is pointing it to a specific site. That could mean it’s purposely opening edge and purposely pointing it to MSN news, or could mean something is telling the computer to open MSN news and Edge is the default browser.

Check your default browsers. If any of them are Edge, change it to something else and see if Edge still launches or a different browser.

Also, check to see if you have any hotkeys that might be doing this. Right click on Edge, go to properties and see if a hotkey/shortcut is set up. If your mouse and/or keyboard has it’s own software, check it to see if some button or combination of buttons is set to launch a browser. I’m assuming this isn’t the case, but if you have any software that remaps keys (ie PowerToys), check it as well.

Another thing, does Edge launch when you move the cursor around on the screen if you’re very careful to not touch anything else? That is, making very sure you’re not bumping a button on the keyboard or mouse. Is this easily repeatable or is it a random thing. Are you able to swap out your mouse and/or keyboard and see if still happens?

I’ve never seen that behavior, either. I suspect you have malware. Or, as someone suggested, a weird lag that makes it look like edge is randomly opening.

But fwiw, i got fed up with other aspects of Windows to the point that i installed linux on my laptop, and one of the nice fringe benefits is that i don’t have distracting “stuff” going on, like pictures and news items and… Almost everything I do works in a default Ubuntu installation, and the interface is a lot like Windows, without the extra clutter.

Sounds like what I used to get whenever I moved the cursor to the bottom left corner of the screen. Hadn’t noticed its absence – wonder bow long it’s been since the last time that happened.

Right, these “articles” all go to Edge when you click them.

When I’m using the MS-Teams app, any links placed there by colleagues open the Edge browser instead of my default Chrome.

Dammit. That’s “moved the cursor too close to the bottom left corner”.
