There MUST be an illustration of this quote some place on line, but I don’t know how to find it. I’ve googled images to no avail. What sources should I try? Mark Twain (of course) said, “If you want a real education, pick up a cat by the tail.” I’d love to find an illustration of that aphorism. There must be several great ones. Where do I look? thanks, dopers. xo, C.
I Googled the main few words in the OP (“Mark Twain” “real education” cat tail), and found the actual Mark Twain quote in the first hit, even though it doesn’t have “:real education” in it. Googling the actual quote gets lots more hits. However, I haven’t found out which Mark Tawin work it comes from.
Yeah, I didn’t find the statement as I “quoted” it, but I still would like to find a way to see an illustration of it, given my inability to draw flies. And the fact that I’m going to be using this statement at a workshop in a couple weeks it would be great to be able to have some sort of illustration to go with it.
Ah – by “illustration” you mean a picture, not just a web page exemplifying the quotation.
I don’t know if Mark Tawin ever actually carried out the experiment. Google Images did not turn up any pictures of cats being carried by their tails, possibly because the experiment is dangerous and possibly illegal.
You could illustrate the concept minimally, with just a picture of a tail like this one.
No, I’m not looking for a picture of a tail or a picture of a cat. I’m picturing a cartoonish picture of a person holding a cat by the tail with the cat’s fur all standing out and the cat’s nails all out and the person looking freaked and the cat looking freaked and the whole picture looking like this is a major mistake.
Googling “cat tail cartoon” turned up this site: http://www.cartoonstock.com/default.asp
For offline sources, you MIGHT find something in Mad Magazine or National Lampoon.
I think nowadays some people would consider the cartoon you want just as bad as a picture of an actual incident.
amazing site. thanks. I probably won’t be able to afford to have someone draw what I want, but it does prove the points that 1) this bbs is the best and 2) just about anything you can imagine is on the net. Also, you’re probably right - no matter what you can think of, someone will be offended by it. Must be one of Murphy’s laws by now, or someone’s. thanks again.
Well, there is this one, but the neither the cat nor the person look as frantic as you might imagine.
How about a sculpture? This certainly captures the sentiment of the Twain quote.
