How do I find out who flies into Dar Es Salaam (Africa), and from where?

There is a good chance that I will be visiting Africa this fall. I’d be flying into Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. I live in the US, and I know that I will have to change planes, most likely in Europe. I’d like to take a couple of days and visit in whatever city I make that change in.

So, knowing only that my end city is Dar Es Salaam, how do I find out what airlines fly into there, and what cities those flights start in? I’m not looking for the shortest or the cheapest flights, but those seem to be the only options when trying to get flight info.

You need the OAG guide. You have to pay for it (a free trial is available online), although I think we have a copy in the office. I should be able to look it up for you…

OK, I have the paper copy. Flights are listed by departure city, but I assume that the flights operate in both directions.

The only US city listed specifically is Washington:

Washington (Dulles), via London Heathrow (British Airways) or via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines)

It appears that the only European cities with direct services from/to Dar es Salaam are:
Amsterdam (KLM)
London Heathrow (BA).

Assuming you’d rather stop over in Europe than in Addis Ababa, it looks like those are your two options. Getting to either London or Amsterdam should be no problem from anywhere in the US.
Edit: looking up under US departure points, the only connection I can find specifically listed (i.e. it is a quick plane change) is Washington Dulles - Addis Ababa - Dar es Salaam on Ethiopian Airlines.

Flight number is ET503 to Addis and ET805 onwards to Dar.

Departs Tue, Fri, Sun at 0945, arrives Addis 0815 next day, departs there 1000 and arrives Dar 1400.

That would likely be the quickest option, others would involve a layover in Europe.

I missed the part where you said you actually wanted to spend a couple of days in Europe. So London or Amsterdam it is then…

Thanks for looking all that up, Colophon. You would think with all the fancy travel search engines out there, there would be an easy online way to do that. (Did I mention FREE?)

Wiki has a list of all airlines and destinations from Dar es Salaam, and I would imagine that everywhere that DAR flies to also goes TO DAR.

Hmm. I never thought to check Wikipedia for a list of airlines. Thanks.
