How do I get better at arm wrestling?

Every year, 8 of us go on a golf trip for 4 days. During this trip we have our annual arm wrestling tournament, and every year I come in 5th.

We’re all between the ages of 37-41. Of the 8 of us, I’m really the only one that regularly goes to the gym and stays fit. I hate to be cocky, but I’m the only one of all of us that has a decent “beach body”, which means I’m thin and muscular. I have more motivation since I’m the divorced one. Everyone assumes that I should win the contest, but I don’t even come close.

I have no problem beating the 3 skinny guys. However, the 4 fat guys beat me every year and it’s getting embarrassing. They sit around on their couches all year watching TV and consuming high-calorie, unhealthy food and beer. Yet I pose no challenge to them in arm wrestling.

What can I do to get better?

People are going to start thinking I’m shilling for these guys. :shifty-eyes: I’m not but they make the best products in the business for strength training. They have top notch books and grip tools. In the meantime, start doing chin-ups with overhand and underhand grips and get a bar you can attach a weight to so that you can roll it up towards you. I’m not a very good arm wrestler but I’m a lot better than I used to be before I got serious about grip training. There are many other great exercises involving twisting wire with pliers and swinging heavy hammers that are really helpful but it would be better to read up on it. Grip training looks easy but can lead to injury.

Books by John Brookfield or Steve Jeck would be great starting points.

Turn your hat around.

Cheat.

Curl your wrist. Kick their shins. Pull on the table with your offhand. Rub yourself in bacon grease before the match so the fatties can’t concentrate.

Kidding aside… wait, no, *half *kidding aside, you’ll probably have to put on a ton of weight and start working the specific muscles that you actually use. I mean, you don’t think your washboard abs and finely toned buttocks are going to help you arm wrestle, do you?

Learned these tricks a couple years ago and haven’t lost since (although if a guy is obviously way more jacked than me I won’t arm wrestle him): 1. pull towards yourself, 2. clench your ass and abs and lats as hard as you can before starting 3. actually, clench every muscle you can, including making a fist with your other hand. I think there’s easily a 300% difference in output from doing those things and how I used to do it, which is just try to push the other guy’s arm over. But maybe you are already doing these things, in which case I dunno, maybe try to simulate arm wrestling with weights by going for 1 rep max or decreased range of movement curls?

I can’t believe I never though of 2. One of the keys to heavy lifting is to tighten the entire body; I’ve never thought to do it while arm wrestling.

Yup. Setting up a set of one-arm weights in the cab of your semi is the best way to go.

Go over the top.

We’re not allowed to lift our elbows.

Tell yourself winning is the only way to reconcile with your estranged son.

Only after you’ve refused a million(IIRC) dollar bribe to quit and thrown a big goon through a window. The arm wrestling is easy after that!
You need a soundtrack too! preferably Van Halen or Sammy Hagar… like this!

I know a guy that got his arm broken arm wrestling in a bar. No shit. Torqued the bone under your bicep (can’t remember the name), the main one. Literally twisted in a clean snap.

Pretty crazy.

You know that guy that beat him brags about that shit till this day.

The two biggest aids are: twisting your wrist as you push, and moving your elbow closer to your body. This extends the angle that his arm is at, and makes it harder to push, whilst making it easier for you.
