I registered with another message board (stupid me) and now I’m getting spam mail on a daily basis. How do I take care of this?
If all the spam is coming from the same place, just log into your mail server and get it to redirect or delete any mail that comes from that address. Or, y’know, any address containing part of that name, etc. You can probably set your email software to do the same thing.
If it’s not all coming from the same place, I dunno, I suppose there are produects out there that deal with it but I just delete it as it comes in. If you only get five or six a day it’s not the end of the world, most people seeing your inbox will realise you don’t really have five different orders of v1aagra!! coming in from different countries, and it’s not like you even have to open most of the mails before you can tell they’re spam.
If you’re getting so much spam that it really is a problem, though, then you have simply run into the same problem as every single other person on the internet, and consequently you’ll have to join the queue for a lasting solution.
When you say ‘spam’ do you just mean lots of advertising messages from a variety of sources, to the address with which you signed up to this message board, or do you mean heaps of messages related to activity on that board; if the latter, it’s probably just a case of logging in there and changing some option in your profile (or unregistering with the board altogether), if the former, I suppose you’ll have to deal with it like any other spam; install a filtering program on your own machine or get your ISP to filter at server level, if they offer such a service.
I don’t mean to be a jerk here; if you cannot switch email clients, ignore the following.
Use the Mozilla suite (I’m not sure Thunderbird is polished enough yet). Besides standard filter controls, it has a Bayesian filter built into it that “learns” to identify spam (you need to turn on junk mail controls). I’ve found it to be quite effective with a little “training” (which consists of clicking on a column in the display window).
