How do I learn to be apathetic?

Got the rock and roll covered…well, more of the rock, less of the roll I suppose.

As for drugs, no thanks.

And as for sex…why did you have to bring that up at a time when I’m already feeling shitty enough? :frowning:

I’m trying real hard to sympathize with a person who says he’s worried, and yet makes “shit loads of money” .

Well, I’d suggest you pick up a good book. Stay the hell away from anything written by George Orwell right now, he’ll have you hiding in your closet by the time you’re done reading any of his books. I’d suggest something either funny or adventerous. My personal reccomendations are:

Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. A very well known book series in these parts, and a great and original comedy. It’s been a radio show, a book, a graphic novel, a game, a play, a TV mini series, and a towel. The only thing worriesome here is that it’s author is dead, and will never write another book, ever. You can read the first few pages here.

and

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. A journalist and his attourney ride to Vegas to cover a motorcycle race while carrying a suitcase packed with every drug known to man, and the book is listed as “nonfiction”. I know you’re not into drugs, niether am I, but this is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read, and it’s made me a fan of Hunter S Thompson. The movie doesn’t do it justice, though I’d still reccomend checking out the trailer so you can play the movie out in your head the way it should be: Johnny Depp as Hunter, and Bonicio Del Toro as Oscar Acosta. You can watch the trailer for the movie here and you can smaple the first few pages here.

I highly suggest you sample both.

Worry about this : I think you either “have it” or you don’t.

I pretty much feel like I’ve never worried about anything in my life.

I never got worked up about exams.

I never worried about getting into college.

I never worried about getting a job.

I didn’t even worry when I got laid off with a mortgage and a wife.

I CERTAINLY don’t worry about the state of the nation or the world. Like you said, GW got elected for 4 more. But you still have a job. Your mom still has a job. Your microwave oven still works. Honestly, though you feel bad, if you’re a professional, it’s probably better for you.

When you don’t have food, shelter or clothing, start to worry.

I think that’s a perfect middle ground (I was thinking of posting the same thing)…I don’t think apathy is any better really than nervous anxiety; you have to meet in the middle somewhere.

I’ve overcome constant anxiety, more or less, and I feel much, much better for it. I agree with others here that “apathy” isn’t the answer. It’s hard to pinpoint when the change occured for me, but I frequently use the serenity prayer when I recognize that I’m obsessing/anxious about something that I can’t control.

I think that releasing the desire to control (I guess, that equates to apathy about having control over things) situations and the way the world responds to you helps tremendously, assuming you have this tendency. Maybe it comes with getting older, but you realize that you can have some control on some things in your life, and do what you can, but you are limited in what you can do in the world overall.

Also, giving up caffeine helped. That stuff freaks me out, I found.

Good luck!
