How do I move a digital certificate?

I have a Digital Certificate (DC) I need to gain access to a website that I use. Therefore I can only access this website from the PC with the DC installed on it. I’ve just bought a new PC and I am relegating the old one to use purely as a backup. What I want to know is can I move the DC from the old pc to the new one? I could probably get a new DC for the PC but that will take a more than a couple of weeks and I’d rather not have to kep th old PC hanging around just to do one job.

Yes, but you have to talk to the people that gave it to you, or those from which you bought it. From a quick google search it is tied to your e-mail address.

I suggest you start there, or give me information on where you originally got the digital certificate.

It depends on how the cert was generated and installed if you can export it or not. The private key needs to have been marked as exportable in order for the transfer to work.

Assuming you’re using IE as your browser, go to tools/Internet Options/Content/Certificates, select your cert and click ‘Export’ This will save it to a file you can transfer to your new machine. If the ‘export private key’ option is not available you can still export the cert and re-import it on the new machine, but the website you need it for may complain.
