For the first time in my life, I’m about to be gainfully employed. The situation is thusly:
Company A, that I really like, called me down for an interview.
Company B, that I like, but not so much, also ditto.
Company A calls back, and I thought it was for a further interview, but lo and behold, it’s an offer.
Company B calls back, and they want me for the next stage.
I went down to A’s offices, and talked to some people, and have accepted the offer.
B has called back to reassure me that my app is in process, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to make me an offer. (Don’t ask, just a vibe).
I want to be able to refuse the offer without giving offence or burning my bridges with B, in case I want to re-apply later. Any suggestions on how to phrase it?
Mods: I thought this might be the best place, but if you want to reject my application for this forum, please employ this thread elsewhere.
Just call up B, explain that you have accepted an offer with A, and thank them for their time. This is one of the hazards of hiring people.
I don’t see why you’d be burning your bridges with company B?
Get in touch with B’s people as soon as you can and say “Hi, I’m ringing to let you know that I’ve accepted a job offer with another company so I would like to withdraw my application for position X.”
You don’t really have any bridges to burn with company B. I agree with the other posters. Let them know you have accepted another offer but appreciated the opportunity to interview with company B.
How about “neener neener! I’ve got a better job! Wouldn’t wanna be ya’! Thank you.”
It’s the “thank you” at the end that makes it all okay.
“Hi, great to hear from you, but I’m afraid I have some bad news for you. I have decided to persue another opportunity. It was a difficult decision, but I felt that this was best for my current situation.”
This works for both delivering your 2 week notice, and for turning down offers.
