How Do (non-hotel) Doormen Get Tipped

I work in hotels so I know how that works, but what about those fancy building in ritzy area, where people live.

Like the guy comes out and says to the doorman of the building he lives in, “Get me a cab?”

Do they tip them per service? Or do they just do it every so often?

You mean like a superintendant ? Aren’t they payed collectively by the tenants ? At least that’s how it works around here in “socialist” France : all residents chip in for maintenance of the public parts of the building, and for the super’s wages.

And of course, the guy helps himself to whatever packages he conveniently forgets to mention he’s taken reception of, just in case you forgot you ordered something expensive. But that’s just perks . Bastard.

My information is rather out of date, but I used to work as a doorman and elevator operator at apartment houses on upper Park Avenue and other ritzy addresses in New York City as a summer job when I was in college during the early 1970s.

Some tenants would tip the doormen for any extra service, such as getting a cab, helping with packages, etc. Some wouldn’t.

We learned which were which quickly enough.

The regular doormen and elevator operators could also count on a big tip at Christmas from some of the tenants, but as seasonal help I never shared in that.

The doormen in my building (nice, not ritzy) were paid by the hour by the building management company . Same as the maintenance team & the janitors. They were expected to perform minor services like holding doors, hailing cabs, and accepting & retrieving pacakges as just part of the job.

It was customary to tip ($1 or so) on the spot for special services, say unloading a trunk full of groceries into a cart, or helping you manuever some big hunk of furniture into the elevator, etc.

At year-end the building management company would take up a tip collection & distribute it to the staff according to a seniority formula they explained. And some folks dropped an extra $20 on their favorite doorman.

When we ordered in pizza, about 1 time in 3 I’d order a second individual size one for the doorman, which the delivery guy would drop off on the way back out. Always got a thank you call from the door, and really good service for everything else. Like the time he held off an enraged psycho woman until the cops could get there.
