How Do People Make Their Hair 'Spikey'?

I sometimes see guys with hairstyles that are short and spikey, not unlike Bart Simpson’s hairstyle, with their hair standing straight up even though it is about an inch long. How do they do this?

I’m sure lots of hairspray is involved, but how do they get their hair to stand up on end? Static electricity??

Thanks.

A comb?

Styling gel - I use L’oreal Straight Up.
You put some in your hair right out of the shower while its still wet and then use your fingers to pull it up straight. It dries kind of crunchy.

Mine’s kind of like that as well. My hair is cut fairly short, and I use a styling gel called Redken Rewind. It’s light and blends into the hair nicely.

Wish I could say I’m a Dapper Dan man.

I use a wax stick for this effect. Again, when your hair is wet, run the stick all over your head, then mold it like you like it.

I like this method better because it stays soft, not “crunchy”.

Any hair shop will have the over-priced “Product” required for the effect. You can also get it from supermarkets, once you know what to look for.

I know punk guys that use sugar water to make a spike much bigger than a couple inches.

Using gel: mold as desired. Will result in a slightly wet looking style, stiff and brittle.

Using pommade: style as desired immediately after application. Will result in less of a wet style. Will look slightly more naturaly, while still allowing a decent amount of placement, but not height (ie: will not hold a long spike as well as gel).

Using wax: style as desired immediately. Will result in a style looking very like one from gel (without the wet look though), but will be more flexible.

If you’re looking for a long mohawk, go for the gel.

If you’re going for the messy look, go with the pommade.

If you would like the pseudo-natural look, go for the wax.

Additional note: comb it against the grain.

Philster: I’ve heard a suggestion just like that in many places, ie: work the gel/fixative into the hair from back to front.

Is there any reasoning behind this? Does it simply add ‘volume’ to the hair? Or is there something more complex at work?

I mostly use hair gel - a stronger, fixing gel will usually work better than the “wet-look” gel when trying to spike your hair.

Wax is good, too, especially if you’re trying to make it look a bit more natural. Styling mousse is also a decent substitute for hair gel, but not as effective, in my opinion at least.

Combing hair with the grain just allows it to lay flat.
Hair on top of the head, from just about forehead back to crown grows forward. But combing it back…while it is short…will force it up off the head. It will try to curve back, gel will hold it, but it actually won’t curve all the way back because it’s too short.

With longer hair, combing against the grain adds volume. With short hair, it make it stick up. Just try brushing the hair on the side of you head straight up - it’ll stick up.

Best - use eggwhite!!

I have spiked hair and do several things. One is that I get my hair cut every 4wks. That is the timing that works best for me, your hair may grow at a different rate. Then I also use a styling product called “glu” by got2be. The most important thing for me is the special texturing scissors my stylist uses. They look sorta like pinking shears (zigzagged blades). My hair is fine, wavy, and inclined to part and cowlick all over so these scissors really inhance the texture makeing it very easy to stand up and remain standing.

I just flashed on the “hair gel” scene from the movie “There’s Something About Mary”
