How do the mods divide up coverage of their forums?

Some forums have more moderators than others. If a forums has, say, just two mods how do they divide the labor? Does a mod agree to cover a forum at certain times of the day(or night)?

Post reports go to all mods in the forum, so whoever sees the report first deals with it. Everything else pretty much gets handled the same way – whoever sees something, deals with it. There are times when no mod for a particular forum is online, which means that sometimes things do not get dealt with immediately. (Middle of the night U.S. time, for instance, tends to be light on mod coverage – luckily, it’s also a relatively slow time on the boards in general.)

If someone is going to be less available than usual for a noticeable chunk of time – for a full day if things are busy at work, or for several days if traveling or on vacation for instance – we generally let the others know on the mod loop so people can keep an eye on the forum the absent mod usually covers. Depending on which forum it is and how many mods are assigned to it, mods from other forums may help take up the slack.

We do not keep any particular schedules or divvy up threads in any particular way, though sometimes an individual mod may recuse himself or herself from a specific thread for whatever reason.

This sounds kind of vague – I’m not being evasive, coverage is just fluid and cooperative according to what’s going on in the boards and what’s going on in people’s lives.

Thanks, twickster, that’s about what I was looking for. It’s just that I had written a PM to a certain mod, and was curious how soon it might be noticed by them.

I am not expecting instant reaction, but if it was going to be more than 24 hours I might try another mod.

Again, thanks!

Same in GQ. I tend to be on during the day, samclem more often in the early morning and at night, but other than that I don’t think there’s much pattern.

Speaking just for myself, I’ll tend to see emails faster than I notice I’ve received a PM. If it’s something that needs immediate attention it’s best to contact several mods since someone may be temporarily unavailable.

Yeah, definitely contact all the mods in the forum at once, unless there’s some reason to single one out.

As far as email vs. PM – I have PMs set up to email me when I get one, but not everyone does. Most of us have dedicated mod email accounts, so it’s not an intrusion to email us, and the mechanics of email are often easier (in terms of “reply all” and autofill on addresses, etc.).

If the question is about a specific post, use the “report this post” function – it’s not just for spam, despite the VBulletin boilerplate on the form you fill out.

We used to have duels, but now it’s Rochambeau.

A Japanese corporation’s president makes Sotheby’s and Christie’s rock-paper-scissor it for who gets to auction its $20 million (estimated) art collection.
I remember this from when it first made the news.

I would have loved to see the boardroom discussions of all three parties from beginning to end.
