My right rear blinker is out, I can’t figure out how to get at the tail lights, either from the outside or from inside the trunk. I am a moron with cars. Please help me.
My Taurus is older than yours, so the two could be different in the way you replace the bulb. On mine you remove the bulb from the inside the trunk. I suspect yours is going to be the roughly the same…
You probably have some trunk lining material inside the trunk. Look behind that and you will see wires going to the back of a plastic assembly. Find the plastic assembly closest to your bulb that’s out. You should at least have two assemblies. Probably three. Rotate the plastic assembly about 90 degrees and it will disengage. The bulb is mounted in the plastic assembly. Usually the bulbs are removed by pushing in slightly and twisting.
Of course they might have changed the whole thing on your car. Mine is an '86. If so, disregard all of the above.

Basically the whole taillight assembly is held on by large plastic screws that you can turn by hand to get them loose (I think this is a nice idea, as if you are ever forced into the trunk of your own car, you have a way of signaling to somebody that you are in there; just unhook the taillight and pull and down using the wires. Pretty conspicuous). Then, you can unclip the individual bulbs and replace them with the new one(s). It’s pretty easy.
Replacing the headlights – now that’s a pain in the ass!
Thanks, CaptMurdock That makes sense, I’ll go try it.
GOM, Thanks, but I think your model must be different than mine. The wires go into a little rubber housing that doesn’t turn or seem to come off. I think, like Cap said, that I have to take the whole assembly off.
Just get a Hayes manual from an auto parts store, it should have instructions on how to do this & whole lot of other things & tricks.
Actually your owners manual probably has instructions as well. The signal light went out for my 2003 Chevy Cavallier and the manual told how to fix it. Unfortunately, because of the way they cut the sheet metal the directions were impossible to follow and I had to take it to the dealer and have them do it. They removed this big chunk of metal to get to the bulb.
I have a '95 Taurus SHO and I have changed the brake lights. You’re correct that the wires go into a rubber gasket type thing in the body but the gasket does come out. I sort of have to pry it out with a screwdriver and it can be a bit of a pain to get it back in, but it’s not impossible and not even really that difficult.
Like I said, this was the brake light, but it sounds from your description that the turn light is similar.
Thanks for the help, everybody. CaptMurdock’s method worked for me. Sorry, emulsified, I changed it before I saw your response, but at least I know for next time that I can pry the gasket off. I appreciate the advice.
Glad to be of service.
