I know how to link to individual posts, but how do you fix the link so the post will show up within the thread, and not just by itself?
I’m curious about this one too, but here’s how I get there.
Assuming I’m reading your question correctly that you want a link to jump to a specific post in another thread while still displaying the whole thread, here’s how I get there.
click on the message poster’s name and select find all threads by user.
find the post in the resulting list and right-click on the link to it, select copy shortcut.
create your post normally and include the link you copied earlier.
The link will look similar to http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=9560697#post9560697
Personally I’m hoping someone will come along with an easier solution.
Yeah, I was just wondering if there was an easier way. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to the numbers - I thought there would be some kind of set format, like the first few numbers would refer to the thread and the last would refer to the post #, but that doesn’t seem to be it. Huh.
If you know the post number (which you can get when you hover on the number at the top right of the post), you can link to it simply by writing [post=<postnumber>]some text[/post].
[post=9565841]This way[/post]. I believe the post numbers are assigned consecutively to posts, regardless of thread.

ETA: Sweet. Thanks!
There’s a vBcode link at the bottom of the page. If you click on it then you can read the help topic for vBcode, which includes, amongst other things,
