How do you link to an individual post?

Title pretty much says it all.

Thanks in advance.

See the little red triangle in the upper right? The number next to it is the post number. Right click and select “copy link”.

Proceed as usual in making a link in your post.

There are two ways you can create a link to an individual post.

  1. Click on the post number to the top right of a post (e.g. runner pat’s post is “#2” in this thread). This will bring you to a page that just has the one post on it. Copy the URL from your browser bar, and paste it into your edit window.

  2. Once you are on the browser window showing a post by itself, at the top right you will see text saying : “Thread:” followed by the thread title. Click on the thread title on the top right. Then you will be brought to a page with the whole thread, but the link actually brings you to an “anchor” meaning that the browser window will scroll down so that the post you are linking to is at the top of the page. You can use this URL as another method of linking to an individual post.

I prefer method 2.

Method 1 produces a URL that will look like this:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=XXXXXX&postcount=YY

where XXXXXX is the post ID (for example runner pat’s post above is post ID 13973273 )
YY is the post number in the thread (for example runner pat’s post above is post # 2 in this thread)
Method 2 produces a URL that will look like this:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=XXXXXX#postXXXXXX

where XXXXXX is the post ID (for example runner pat’s post above is post ID 13973273 )

To be clear, runner pat described one way to accomplish Arnold’s method 1.

Method 1 is good if the purpose of your link is entirely contained in that one post. Method 2 is good if you want to point to the first post in a series.

Does this thing work?
Cool.
