How do you play craps?

I hear it is the best odds in the house. But is their a system to help a person win?

their = there

This thread is better suited for General Questions. I’ll move it for you.

Think of it as a race: You are trying to beat “7”. On the first roll, your ‘come-out’ roll, you roll the dice and either set your “point”, get a 2, 3, or 12 (an instant loss), or a 7 or 11 (instant win). If you establish a “point”, you then switch gears and try to roll that “point” before a 7 comes up again (seven is now bad).

My advice would be to find a decent shareware or freeware version of the game, download it, and try it out. I could explain the betting to you, but it would get a little longwinded and confusing for you.

Tripler
It’s all about hitting or avoiding that 7.

(Excuse me, I am working from memory here.)

Craps is based on the simplr fact that on a pair of true dice, you are more likely to make a seven than any other total.

Seven (a “natural”) can be made six ways, while snake eyes come up in only one way. Each number has its own probability of coming up. Since there are 36 possible combinations, and since seven takes six, you can see that the odds are 1 in 6 of seven coming up. (That is to say 0.16555 chance)

If your point was two, then of course your odds of hitting would be 1 in 36.

No problem as long as you know and understand the odds (or probability if you prefer) of making your point.

OK, so since it is a dice game how can a sharp player make a diffference? Well in truth he cannot in a casino game. Even if he wins the casino pays out less than the mathamatically correct amount; the rest goes to the all-night buffet. Still, by knowing the odds of each point you can determine if you want to bet heavy or light.

(I refer you to Scarne for a more complete discussion on this.)

Years ago, a math professor showed that craps gave you the best odds in the casino – if you don’t throw the dice. There is a way to play the side bets so that the house percentage is the lowest for any game played (they still have an edge, of course).

Although Tripler gives a good explanation of the main bet on a craps table (called the Pass or Pass Line bet), that’s only one of the eight million bets which can be made on a typical craps table. You can also bet on the Don’t Pass Line, which is the opposite of the Pass bet – you lose on 7 or 11, you win on craps, and if a point is set (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10), you win if 7 comes up before the point is re-rolled. There are also the Come and Don’t Come bets, which are essentially the same as the Pass Line bets except it can be played whenever you want; the Pass bets go down before the first roll of the dice.

The reason craps has such good odds is that, while the Pass Line bet pays even money despite the fact that you’re at a disadvantage, once the point is set you can then put additional money down on the “Odds” bet – betting that you’ll win your Pass bet by hitting the point before rolling a 7. While the Pass bet pays even money, the Odds bet will pay true odds (or very, very close to them). The house still has an advantage because you can’t make this bet until you’ve set a point and therefore the Pass Line has become a poor bet. (When you made the bet there was a chance of a 7 or 11 on the come out roll, but now a 7 is a loser – and you’re not allowed to take your Pass bet off the table until it’s resolved.) Making the Odds bet improves your odds in the aggregate considerably, although because of that Pass bet they’ll never be ideal. However, the reason the casino offers it is because, even though it has relatively excellent odds for the player, the odds get even better the more money the player wagers. (By putting more on the Odds bet, more of the player’s total wager is on a bet with good odds, partly ameliorating the poor odds on the Pass Line bet.) Therefore, the smart play is to put a lot of money on the Odds bet – which means that in the long run, when the house’s slight advantage is in play, the house will win a lot of money on every win. This, plus what Michael Crichton calls the “Gambler’s Ruin” effect (whereby even in perfectly true odds games, the party with the bigger bankroll will win, because he can survive a longer run of bad luck without having to walk away) means that the house is still going to make good money on those Odds bets.

That’s kind of true.

On the come-out roll, the odds are in your favor - the only table in a casino where this is true.

The bet you place on the pass line on the come-out, breaks down like this:
You have 8 ways or winning (when a 7 or 8 is thrown),
And Only 4 ways of losing (when a 2 / 3 or 12 is thrown).

Unfortunately (and obviously) the odds revert back to the house once the point is set.

Unless you have the $ to risk and enjoy the gambling rush, heed Bobby DeNiro’s advice in Casino: The only winners are those who don’t play.

Cliffy has done a great job of summarizing the essentials of Craps. I just have two points to add:

The “Don’t Foo” bets are not exact opposites of their “Foo” bets – the casino preserves some slight advantage by having the Don’t bets tie (instead of win) on crap 12, sometimes on crap 2 (which is mathematically identical), and sometimes on crap 3 (which is worse for the player).

Also, there are other bets on the layout. The Place and Lay wagers bet that a certain point number will (or won’t) come up before the next 7 (without waiting for it to be rolled first to establish a point number). The other zillion bets have progressively worse odds for the player. Do note, though, that a roll of 7 will resolve every wager on the layout.

I like to bet the Field bet – it’s horrible, horrible odds, but the first time I ever played craps I won it on three consecutive rolls of the dice and ever since I’ve been addicted to it.

Quick scheme that I use:

Pass line bet, back it up with max odds
2 or 3 come bets, backed up by max odds

I always bring $3-400 to the table so I can out last a couple of bad shooters.

Stay away from field, hardways, or straight bets if you are trully looking for the best odds n your favor.

D/L “wincraps” and practice. It is the best simulator, and it allows you to build betting strategies and let the game play automatically to see how they work.
