Sleep alone, unless GF is blessing me with her company.
At one time, I slept with six (6) cats. VERY warm.
Either side, or back, never stomach, when by myself.
Spooned to GF when she’s here.
Only bedclothing is sweatpants/sweatshirt to break a fever.
Alone and on my side; I flip from side to side. Sometimes I wake up completely wrapped up and need a while to disentangle myself. I need a solid pillow, something my mother doesn’t understand (she once “improved” my best pillow by taking out half the stuffing!). Most of the pillows I find aren’t hard enough.
I need to have weight on me to fall asleep. Even in the summer, I’ll plop a quilt on. How can you tell I’ve fallen asleep? Not from the breathing or from the stillness… from the quilt being kicked to the floor “mchsshsmmmm… turn sides”
I use at least a T-shirt and panties; in the winter an actual thick pajama (why aren’t they selling pajamas that have narrow ankles and wrists any more? yeah, we know, it’s easier to make them this way… but I wake up from cold forelegs!). No bra. I’ve read ladies here talking about needing to sleep with a bra and I’m very, very grateful not to need one.
Oh, I forgot.
King sized bed made of Tempur-Pedic Space Age Amazing Memory Foam. I swear, it really does feel better than any other mattress. I should know- I do spend time on a lot of other mattresses.
What??
I sleep by myself, on my stomach when I am not using my CPAP machine (I am waiting to hear about changing masks to make any position more comfortable); I also have a mouthguard I am supposed to use but mostly don’t. Even though I am alone in my full-size bed, I tend to sleep toward the left.
Summer: shorts, t-shirt; no sheets (or one after it cools down)
Spring/Fall/Winter: PJ pants and t-shirt, or flannel PJs;; sheet; blanket; quilt or throw
so, on those odd nights when you are neither alone nor with your boyfriend, who do you sleep with?
I’m a lone nude who sleeps like a starfish, meaning that I sleep in whatever position my body decides to cave in. No rituals other than I maybe read a couple of pages before I notice that I’m reading the same sentence over and over and decide its time to shut off the brain.
In summer time its usually daylight all the time, but I do not need to completely shut out the light, simple curtains will do fine.
In wintertime I sometimes use an extra wool blanket when temperatures outside fall below 10-15 minus celsius. That’s because I prefer to sleep with the window open.
Ever since childhood I have had the biggest sleeping heart; when driving to holidays with my parents I quickly fell asleep and would stay so until the car stopped. Sometimes I would crawl back into the trunk, other times my parents would find me on the floor almost under the seats. Now I’m a wee bit too big for that, so I just drool on the person sitting next to me.
In the army I would lean my chin on the gunbarrel and fall asleep as soon as the hatch on the armoured vehicle closed shut (but that was often the only chance to get some rest when in the field).
When doing fieldwork and on diving trips I sleep as well outside on a concrete wharf as inside a nice cosy lavvo.
But I never snore.
How do I sleep? Badly, in a word. In fact, I started another thread on wedge pillows, to see if that’s the magic bullet for me. I’m not sure exactly what the issue is. I seem to have some sleep apnea, but the doctor wasn’t sure whether it’s obstructive or otherwise. I’ve tried the CPAP machine, without much success. Lately things have been worse, because my gallbladder seems to be bothering me, such that I have trouble sleeping on my side. I keep waking up, half the time with my pajamas skewed half the way around.
For me?
Alone… I tend to stay in one spot. Sleeping bags and precarious sleeping arrangements have taught me well! But I do tend to fall asleep on my stomach and wake up on my back. So I don’t move around a ton, but I do flip over.
I prefer dark, but light doesn’t bother me all that much. I’ve become notorious for being able to sleep anywhere.
I do wear a mouthguard when I sleep, because I have a tendency to grind my teeth.
At home in winter I’ll wear a t-shirt and flannel pajama pants. In the summer? Probably just boxers and a really light sheet, anything more than that and I can’t sleep.
What kind of a sleeper are you? Alone, or with someone? A pet or a stuffed animal, maybe?
I share a bed with my husband and sometimes with our 10-month-old son. He’s getting over nightime separation anxiety - for a while he wanted to sleep with us all the time, but he’s been getting better. However, he had a stomach virus over the weekend. Last night was…uh…delightful. My left arm is still kind of numb from having a 20-pound baby sleep on it. Hopefully this won’t set him back too much, but if it does, whatever.
Do you sprawl out like a starfish, or stay mostly in one position? Side, stomach, or back, or keep on rollin’?
If our son isn’t in bed with us, I sleep flat on my back with my hands at my sides or on my right side curled around a pillow. If my son is in bed, I sleep flat on my back with his head resting on my shoulder or arm, which is usually curled around him. If he decides to sleep flat, I usually sleep on my side. My son often wakes at 4 a.m. giggling and ready to play. Sleeping on my side makes it easier for me to pretend to be asleep, which usually means my son will doze off again, too.
Do you need it really dark or do you prefer a nightlight? Got quilts, heat packs, or makuras?
I like it dark, but between hitch hiking through South America and motherhood, I’ve learned to sleep deeply in most any circumstance or condition. At home we have a comfy duvet, but we don’t use it if our son is in bed with us.
Do you use something for snoring, apnea, TMJ syndrome, or dental issues?
Nope.
Any rituals? Do you sleep with sleepwear on, or none?
The only ritual I have is getting ready for bed - I feel gross if I don’t wash my face, put on a bunch of lotion and, of course, brush my teeth. I love having an opportunity to read before getting into bed - sometimes I get to and sometimes I don’t.
I used to sleep naked all the time, but now I usually wear flannel pajama pants, no undies, and a t-shirt in case our son wakes in the middle of the night and I have to bring him to bed or rock him to sleep. Can’t imagine sitting in the rocker start naked or having our son sleeping on top of me while I’ve got no clothes on. That just strikes me as a little weird.
I sleep in bed with my husband, and if I’m napping on the weekends or my son’s having an especially fussy night, he sleeps in the bed with me.
If the baby’s not there, I still have a stuffed cow that I hold onto while I sleep. I sleep better holding onto something, and the cow is the perfect size.
I change positions frequently during the night - mostly side and stomach.
We sleep with the TV on - I need the background noise. If it’s just me and my husband, the ceiling fan is on and we have tons of blankets. Otherwise, with the baby, no fan and the blankets are off the bed (for safety).
We sleep naked on normal nights, I sleep in flannel PJs with the baby (because I can’t have blankets).

What kind of a sleeper are you? Alone, or with someone? A pet or a stuffed animal, maybe?
A husband. Could qualify as pet or stuffed animal depending on his mood, I suppose.
Do you sprawl out like a starfish, or stay mostly in one position? Side, stomach, or back, or keep on rollin’?
I sleep on my right side. Sometimes I turn on to my left side, but then the husband is there, and he will want to snuggle or some such nonsense when I want to sleep so I don’t generally turn until he’s up for the morning.
Do you need it really dark or do you prefer a nightlight? Got quilts, heat packs, or makuras?
Really really dark, and quiet. I’m about ready to insert his police scanner in his nose if I hear those damn tones again, but that’s another story. And the TV had best be OFF. I have a comforter that I must have over me too.
Do you use something for snoring, apnea, TMJ syndrome, or dental issues?
Since it’s the husband doing the snoring, apnea, TMJ etc. stuff, I use an elbow in his side and a loud “Roll Over”.
Any rituals? Do you sleep with sleepwear on, or none?
Not really, I do prefer to have the sheet tucked in on the bottom (he always yanks it out) and even with the comforter - and the sheets straight if that makes sense. I don’t wear anything when I sleep but underwear.
And anything else you care to add.
I’m really really tired today. And what’s a makura?
Sleep with my wife. I hate sleeping in the bed when she travels on business (cue Police song), so I’ll sometimes sleep on the futon in the guestroom/TV room instead. The cat stays at the foot of the bed unless we’re both sleeping together; then, she puts herself between the two of us, head level, on one of our pillows (usually mine).
I sleep mostly on my back. I may move around during the night, but I usually end up on my back. The Mrs. tosses and turns more, plus she’ll latch onto me, which means she usually takes about 2/3 of the bed, but it never bothers me (we have a Queen).
We have a nightlight for the cat (by her food), but I don’t care much either way. I can sleep with the lights on almost as easily. My wife gets cold easily, so she usually has more covers than I need, but since I always sleep in the raw (she doesn’t), it usually balances out just fine.
Duh! I forgot the caveat in my first post that that’s if I make it to my bed. More often than not I fall asleep on the dark red velveteen Most Comfy Couch Ever, on my stomach. I can envision during that all the time over the summer since that’s the room the window AC is in.
Alone, or with someone? A pet or a stuffed animal, maybe?
Currently alone, regrettably. No pets or stuffed animals.
Do you sprawl out like a starfish, or stay mostly in one position? Side, stomach, or back, or keep on rollin’?
I generally sleep on my stomach, with my forehead sort of propped on my pillow (or something firmer, like the headboard). I tend to keep my hands forward, either under the pillow or alongside my head–it’s a vaguely catlike position, though I’d make a dreadfully ungainly cat. Sometimes I sleep on my side with my pillow wadded up under my head, or sleep on the couch for the sake of firmer head support.
Do you need it really dark or do you prefer a nightlight? Got quilts, heat packs, or makuras?
Nope. I like a really dark room, but don’t require it. I do like to cover up, but a simple sheet will do. I can sleep almost anywhere except on a plane. (Borderline phobia plus uncomfortable seats doesn’t encourage sweet dreams for me.)
Do you use something for snoring, apnea, TMJ syndrome, or dental issues?
Nope. I probably should, since my snoring has been described as, well, seismic in nature. Sleeping on my stomach seems to help a bit, but that’s all I do about it.
Any rituals? Do you sleep with sleepwear on, or none?
No rituals. I generally sleep with a pair of shorts on, at most.
I sleep on my side or on my back wearing boxers.
I usually snuggle up to my fiance until I get sleepy, then roll over to my side of the bed.
The only thing odd about the way I sleep is that I need total sensory deprivation. I’m a very light sleeper and any noise or light will wake me up. So, I need the lights off, window shades drawn and earplugs or I can’t sleep.
“When I’m with someone, I like to sleep facing them with my hand on his chest or arm. And of course my leg thrown over his for support!”
How do you get any sleep at all? I’d be…err … just a little bit excited. As a man of course.
Anyway, I sleep in my jockey shorts in summer, jockeys and bottom long johns in the winter.
My arms go “to sleep” often when I sleep so I toss and turn lots when sleeping.
Happens when one gets older, I guess.
Also, I keep a fan running. It blanks out outside noise and allows me to sleep much more soundly.
Ummmm … why, if you don’t mind my asking?
Generally alone, sides and belly, various states of dress, no sleep specific clothes, usu without music or other distractions, no particular rituals, infrequently with an ambien, which is always due to rotating schedules not insomnia.
What kind of a sleeper are you?
Variable. I often have a hard time getting to sleep. I’m a heavy sleeper most of the night, until it gets toward morning, then I’m easy to wake up.
** Alone, or with someone? **
Wifey. We stay out of each others way when we’re trying to sleep, though.
**A pet or a stuffed animal, maybe? **
No, but I usually hold on to a pillow on my chest. And I have one under my right leg because of some nerve problems. Whether it really helps, I’m not sure.
**Do you sprawl out like a starfish, or stay mostly in one position? **
Mostly just lie on my back. I’ll often go to my side to get warmer, and I may fall asleep that way, but I always wake up on my back.
**Side, stomach, or back, or keep on rollin’? **
See above.
**Do you need it really dark or do you prefer a nightlight? **
The darker, the better.
**Got quilts, heat packs, or makuras? **
No. We use a comforter for a heavy blanket, though.
**Do you use something for snoring, apnea, TMJ syndrome, or dental issues? **
Night guard when I remember. I tried a CPAP, but couldn’t handle it. When I actually did manage to sleep with it, I woke up energetic, but feeling a little off. I decided I’d rather be a bit tired.
**Any rituals? **
I do toe touches and often crack my back before getting into bed.
**Do you sleep with sleepwear on, or none? **
Boxers and V-neck T.
Actually, it’s probably to remind my wife it’s there so she doesn’t kick it in the middle of the night.
