There are plenty of video and audio recordings of such assholes’ speeches and performances. Those can be studied at length. There is no need to offer these assholes a free platform… and if there is, why them and not me? What is special about hate that makes it such a priority to provide them with a free megaphone?
I am simply arguing that all speech should be heard in university. All speech. Inviting speakers does not imply agreement with them. Should we deny a true believer Maoist a chance to be heard? After all, Maoist crimes dwarf anything that happened in the South. I’ll say it again…its about hearing as many viewpoints as possible. And none of them should get paid.
Why do Duke and the Maoist get invitations, but I don’t? What’s special about them or their ideologies? Are you saying that colleges should prioritize inviting bigots and Maoists (and/or other extreme ideologies) over other speakers? Or are you saying that they should invite people at random? Obviously they can’t invite everyone, since they have limited time and space. So how should they choose who to invite?
And yes, next time, I would definitely like to see the police using live rounds and doing whatever necessary to protect innocent people from leftist nazis that are assaulting people and destroying property.
Offer yourself. Why doesn’t a conservative like Shodan? The simple answer is that conventional views are commonly heard. Unless you are being blocked from speaking, I am not sure what your point is.
Would my argument change if I had been sending emails to the UC administration every day for the past year? I don’t think so. If a university cannot be selective of speakers based on past things they have said, then what basis can they use?
I think the Dope has a new fantasist in the house! Welcome!
Don’t worry. Your fantasies may be of molasses, or honey (like another prominent Doper fantasist), or syrup, or perhaps blueberry compote, but rest assured that we Dopers are a tolerant bunch, and whatever sweet substance you wish to drizzle over the bodies of the men you most desire (are firemen your thing? perhaps burly police officers? sweaty construction workers?), we won’t judge. We want all Dopers, and all people, to be welcome to think about and even live out their fantasies, as long as they are between consenting adults. You may be spreading these arguments to try and keep these fantasies at bay, but don’t worry! There’s nothing wrong with all that you desire. Fantasize away, baby!
You be you, my blueberry-guzzling friend! You find those lovely men you seek, and you enjoy all that nature has to offer together!
The invitation fro Milo came from a recognized conservative group on campus. You want to get invited? Write a book, articles, appear on TV. Do something to let people know you exist and that you have an interesting point of view.
I’m not gay, but if I were, I would definitely prefer somebody like Milo.
Milo is one of the best gays to currently exist on the planet.
All other gays pale in comparison to Milo.
The other gays have no balls, and many of them are ignorant mental cases, such as sucking up to people and cultures that wish to murder them.
At the end of the day, as long as good gays like Milo survive, then I am content with that outcome, and I don’t really care too much about the other gays.
You are basically arguing for silencing unpopular speakers. This goes against the very idea of a university. Depending on the era, it could be used to not hear civil rights advocates or draft dodgers. Should we not invite an Al Queda member? Donald Trump? Its important to hear fringe voices so we can both understand them and understand why they belong on the fringe.
I have written a couple of books (and I would be GLAD to sell them to you :)), but that’s not really my point. My point was about whether colleges and universities should be obligated to invite bigots to speak – and if so, only bigots? Or any extremists? Or anyone at all?
As for this particular case, campus organizations can invite anyone they like, and students can protest if they wish. Peaceful protesting is fine, violence (such as that exhibited by a small number of assholes at this protest) is not.
