By that I mean that when you look at GQ, you can go back 2,119 pages at this present time to June of 99. I assume it changes every time new posts add up to make a new page in GQ, so then does the 2,119 page you can go back to become the next page up, like the one after the page that’s last now? Is 2,119 always the number pgs. you can go back? I understand the limitations of a server and how you can only keep so many pages available.
Also, when I search the archives of questions, they can go back further than the last page showing currently in that section, whether GQ or Cafe or other, so where do old posts go? In other words, I guess what I’m asking is-
how many SD threads still exists (just for GQ) somewhere out there in your dungeons
and
what is the entire number of these GQ threads availabe- is it 103,440 or does searching the archive yield threads from further back than 6-99?
All threads visible on the board are able to be accessed; that goes back to our earliest postings in June of 1999, when this board first opened for business.
It’s not a good idea to resurrect old threads, though, unless there’s compelling reason to do so.
We occasionally consider archiving older threads. We have thought it might be a better idea to make everything older than a certain point “read only,” but for the present time, it’s all in one place.
My join date is a couple of days later, on March 11, 1999, as you can see here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/member.php?userid=121
I was out of town on business for a couple of days just as this web board started up, so I was a little late signing up.
So you are among the early users (user number 239).
But I’m not sure there are any posts going all the way back, I sort of remember we lost a few during one of the updates. It may be the oldest posts are from June 99.
