How far can police go to resolve a noise complaint?

A few extremely minor incidents IRL and a couple of threads here have gotten me wondering: there are, obviously, times when it’s proper to call the cops for noise complaints. But therein lies an inherent problem: if it’s THAT noisy, what if the people making the noise can’t hear the cops knocking on their door? What if they just don’t care and ignore the cops and anything they say (or yell, since I assume in such a case people like that wouldn’t even open the door)? What do the cops do then? Breaking down the door or something like that is obviously out of line, but do they really have no choice then but to leave 1000 decibel music ringing through the neighborhood until 5 am? What are the police allowed to do?

Seems like they could be charged with disturbing the peace, and then refusing to answer the door could be considered evading arrest, which could possibly, just maybe, warrant kicking the door down.

But that’s a lot of maybes, and the end of my WAG.

My father (a retired police officer) once recounted a story about an obnoxious resident who kept turning his stereo back up as soon as the police would leave his door. After several visits, one of the cops simply walked in, smashed the stereo to bits, and threw it out the window.
Something tells me things don’t work that way most places anymore.
