Pitting the family who lives behind me

Dear “neighbors” (and I use that word loosely),

I don’t know how long you’ve lived there but I do know over the last couple of years I’ve had to call the cops on you at least a dozen times.

Usually because you decide to party way too loudly, way too late into the night. You want to party, fine.

But if you don’t turn the music down after about 10 pm and I am GOING to call the cops on your ass every single time. Yes, even on the weekends. My husband works retail and the word “weekend” has little meaning for him as he usually works on one or both days of the so-called “weekend”.

You’re lucky I can’t call the cops on your ass on the day time since your overly loud music was only annoying and not keeping anybody from sleeping in this house and I have recently acquired some noise cancelling earbuds.

Not everybody in the neighborhood (because I went out for a walk and just out of curiosity left my earbuds out until I got to the end of the street, over 200 ft from your residence) wants to hear your woo woo Tejano/Mexican/whatever the heck it was music with the whining guitars and accordians.

I don’t know you…but based on what I DO know…you’re annoying as fuck. You leave your dogs out all day and they yap their brains out and/or sound like they’re trying to kill each other. Then there’s the music almost every weekend, which is fine until it’s after 10 pm and at least two members of this household (usually the hubby and kiddo) are trying to get some fucking sleep.

I don’t know you and maybe you’re really nice people. But based on the experiences I’ve had with your dogs and your music so far…you seem like assholes.

Why are you such a hater? (J.K.!)

Yeah, one of my pet peeves as well. At least no one around here parties much after 10:00.

You’ve been neighbours for two years and you haven’t even talked to them? :dubious::confused:

Why haven’t you been arrested for misuse of emergency services?

Calling the police on a noise complaint is perfectly legitimate.

Most noise ordinances have a cutoff around 10pm.

What is she supposed to do, call the police business number after 10 p.m.?

Don’t most police departments have a non-emergency number for such problems? The one in my area does, and yes, we’ve used it when “music” from THE NEXT COMPLEX OVER is loud enough we have trouble hearing our TV at sane volume.

Some re-direct to 911 after hours, some are around-the-clock.

Generally speaking, if the entire neighborhood can hear your dogs / music / shouting / motorcycle / lawn equipment for the better part of an entire day, you are being a menace to your neighbors and you’re not a decent person in my view.

Most everyone makes some noise sometimes.

Almost no one makes a lot of noise almost all the time.

If you are the latter, you’re an asshole, end of discussion. Yes, you’re responsible for the noises your pets make.

I’ve found that these types of people are never up at six a.m. when you bang on their door. My husband did that once and they were never overly loud again

Ah, maybe you’re confused about some of the many functions of the police. Let me fill that knowledge-hole for you: they are tasked with enforcing city ordinances. Sometimes, they can’t guess where and when those ordinances are being violated, and depend on citizens reporting those violations.

I’ve called the non-emergency police line on my neighbors a few times, always after asking them to tone it down at least once. I generally wait until midnight on week nights and 1 or 2 AM on the weekend. The houses are all rentals so it’s not always the same people.

I looked at several random cities’ noise laws and they were all 10p-7a weekdays.

Damn, you’re generous.

Sure I told this before, probably when it was happening.

About 7-8 years ago I lived in rental townhouses. My neighbor’s door was next to mine and one of their bedroom windows was above both doors. Neighbor was a CINO. Christian in Name Only, like most modern Republicans. She enjoyed listening to marching music and “Christian” music, often at fairly high volume.

For a while, the people underneath us (door on the other side behind us), who were Guatemalan, were listening to Spanish language music. CINO calls the police to complain about the music - in the middle of the afternoon - complaining that the loud music is causing her heart problems. Cops come over, speak to her, speak to me, speak to neighbors.

I had no issues with it at all. Middle of the day, not super loud, not a worry. I point out to the cops that CINO listens to loud marching music all the time, so this whole “heart” thing is bullshit. CINO gets angry at me, but changes tune. Now she’s upset because it isn’t “Christian” music. Which completely pissed me off, because who the fuck is she to say that no one can listen to music unless it is CHRISTIAN??? And besides, all that John Phillips Sousa isn’t exactly “christian” either.

Then cops come back up from speaking to the downstairs neighbor and say that the wife is practicing for her church choir. So it IS Christian Music!!!

CINO complains that it isn’t in ENGLISH!!

Cops pretty much shake their heads and walk away.

We’re in the city and houses are right on top of each other. I can hear people who have phone conversations on their back porches so I don’t think there’s any point to setting an unreasonably high bar.

But loud beer pong matches on a back porch at 12:30 AM on a Tuesday will always get a call if they don’t respond to my polite request.
